What specific problem are you solving?
More than 240 million children and young people with disabilities face barriers to accessing inclusive education (UNICEF, 2021). In Latin America, school dropout rates reach 30% in secondary school (UNESCO, 2023), especially affecting vulnerable communities and students with learning difficulties. The lack of teacher training, accessible tools, strategies for families, and the limited integration of data deepen this educational gap. Our experience as finalists of MIT Solve 2024 and working directly with teachers revealed a central challenge: educators do not have agile, contextualized tools and adequate accompaniment to address diversity in the classroom. Families, in turn, lack clear resources to support from home. In addition, education systems do not efficiently use available data to guide their pedagogical decisions. This combination of teaching overload, lack of technological accessibility, and absence of training and support processes generates silent exclusion for thousands of students. Solving this problem requires not only technology, but also awareness-raising processes, training and pedagogical use of tools that promote a true inclusive education from the classroom and at home.
What is your solution?
Skalo is an educational solution based on generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) that helps teachers plan inclusive classes, generate adapted resources and provide personalized strategies to families. It uses SkaloScan's data analytics (academic, socio-emotional and contextual) and the information collected since 2022 by SkaloSupport to train its multi-agent AI system. We started in 2021 with SkaloSupport, which allows students to be characterized, barriers to be identified, and reasonable adjustments to be calculated. In 2022 we developed SkaloScan, which centralizes and analyzes educational and family data. In 2024, we train a generative AI agent that transforms this data into concrete actions: planning, materials, and accompanying strategies. This agent can even be activated via WhatsApp, facilitating access in contexts with low connectivity. Skalo not only delivers technology, but also incorporates a model of teacher training and awareness in inclusion, which ensures the effective use of tools in the classroom. This combination of data, AI and pedagogical support has been key to achieving real impact. Implemented in 27 public schools in Colombia and Peru, it has benefited more than 5,000 students and teachers. Its scalability positions it as a powerful tool to advance towards inclusive and equitable education.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Skalo's solution directly benefits teachers and families, and indirectly students who face barriers to learning and school participation. Teachers are provided with practical, personalized, data-driven tools that allow them to plan inclusive lessons, generate tailored resources, and apply differentiated strategies. Families, in turn, have access to clear support routes to support from home. The greatest impact falls on students at risk of exclusion, especially those with disabilities, learning difficulties or contexts of high vulnerability. By receiving more contextualized and timely attention, their participation, permanence and school performance improve. We have implemented Skalo in 27 public schools in Colombia and Peru, benefiting more than 5,000 students and teachers. The integration of generative AI and educational analytics allows a profound transformation in the way diversity is addressed in the classroom, reducing gaps and promoting more equitable education. This solution has been designed by actively listening to users, so it responds directly to their daily challenges and the need for fast, accessible and effective tools.
