What specific problem are you solving?
Higher education instructors often lack the time and support to create personalized, mastery-based content tailored to diverse student needs. Traditional course design models are expensive, time-consuming, and not grounded in learning science, making them inaccessible to many institutions. Furthermore, most existing tutoring platforms are rigid, offer limited adaptability, and are cost-prohibitive, particularly for resource-constrained colleges. Instructors and institutions need tools that allow rapid adaptation of content while supporting personalized, real-time feedback that aligns with both course goals and individual learning trajectories. The problem is exacerbated in foundational STEM courses, where high dropout rates often stem from students lacking prerequisite knowledge and personalized support. These students—particularly those from historically underserved backgrounds—may not receive the timely interventions they need to succeed. Without scalable tools to generate and refine educational materials, faculty and instructional designers face serious limitations in scaling quality instruction.
What is your solution?
OATutor-GenAI is an open-source, generative AI-powered tutoring system that enables instructors to create adaptive, mastery-based learning experiences aligned to their own course content. Built upon Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) principles and generative AI models, the platform automates the generation of assessments, personalized hints, and feedback. Instructors begin with a lightweight onboarding process, followed by custom prompt engineering and course-specific configuration. OATutor-GenAI integrates with LMS platforms via LTI and collects real-time student interaction data to adaptively scaffold learning. Institutions retain ownership of all generated content under a Creative Commons license. The system allows dynamic generation of formative assessments and personalized feedback tailored to student transcripts, demographics, and learning behavior. It supports both teacher-personalized and student-personalized pathways. With this solution, institutions can scale high-quality adaptive instruction affordably—without requiring AI expertise from faculty.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
OATutor-GenAI serves higher education students and instructors, with a primary focus on supporting scalable, personalized learning in community colleges, public universities, and adult learning programs. Students benefit from real-time adaptive feedback that helps fill gaps in understanding, improve persistence, and increase academic confidence—especially in foundational STEM courses. Instructors are empowered to generate aligned assessments and tailored feedback for their classes without needing deep AI or programming expertise. The system reflects their unique pedagogy while offering flexibility to experiment with different instructional approaches. Institutions benefit from reduced costs, increased student engagement, and improved course pass rates. In resource-constrained settings, OATutor-GenAI becomes a cost-effective, research-based tool for delivering scalable tutoring. The open-source nature of the platform ensures that the entire education ecosystem—researchers, instructors, and technologists—can iterate and expand its functionality. By democratizing access to adaptive tutoring, we aim to close learning gaps and promote equity in higher education.
