What specific problem are you solving?
India has over 140 million students in Grades V–XII, more than half from rural areas. While rural enrollment among 11–14-year-olds is a promising 98%—with 71.7% in government schools—the real crisis lies beneath the surface: learning levels are alarmingly low and falling. Even before COVID-19, fewer than one in three Grade V students and less than half of Grade VIII students could perform basic division. The pandemic deepened this divide, especially for rural children, creating a two-year learning gap. By 2022, 31.5% of Grade VIII students couldn’t read a Grade II text, and 56.4% couldn’t do simple division. Despite strong focus on early years through initiatives like NIPUN Bharat, middle and high school students—those at a critical juncture in their academic journey—are being left behind. Without structured, in-school catch-up mechanisms, they continue to slip through the cracks. This learning crisis is compounded by a severe shortage of qualified teachers in rural schools, especially in Math, Science, and English. Teachers are overburdened with administrative work, lack training, and have limited access to effective teaching resources. The result is disengaged classrooms, rising absenteeism, and growing dropout rates—jeopardizing the future of millions.
What is your solution?
Vidya Shakti is a tech-enabled, community-driven solution addressing the rural education crisis in India, where millions of students lack access to quality learning—especially in Math, Science, and English. Our low-cost, scalable model delivers live, interactive lessons to government schools (Grades V–XII), bridging learning gaps and tackling severe teacher shortages. Each school is equipped with a Rural Interaction Centre (RIC)—featuring a Smart TV or ICT panel, keyboard, mouse and reliable internet. A trained local Coordinator ensures smooth streaming of sessions via Zoom (also available on YouTube) and supports student engagement on the ground. Classes are conducted in regional languages by expert teachers, using globally respected tools like PHET Colorado, OLabs, Wordwall and other contextualized open-source resources. Our pedagogy blends simulations, gamified activities, hands-on learning, real-time doubt clearing and weekly micro-assessments to reinforce understanding. A centralized ERP platform and mobile app support daily monitoring and data-driven decision-making. Vidya Shakti also builds long-term capacity by training government school teachers in digital tools and modern pedagogy. With MIT Solve’s support, we aim to scale this replicable model and deliver equitable, high-quality education to the last mile of rural India.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Vidya Shakti serves underserved students in rural India, particularly those in Grades V–XII in government schools, who face significant challenges including a lack of qualified teachers, poor infrastructure and declining learning outcomes in Math, Science and English. We also support local communities by creating employment opportunities and government school teachers by building their capacity in digital teaching. Our solution creates impact in three key ways: 1. Improved Learning Outcomes: Students access high-quality, interactive lessons delivered by expert teachers using simulation-based, gamified and activity-driven methods. This improves engagement, comprehension, and academic performance. 2. Digital Inclusion: By setting up Rural Interaction Centres equipped with Smart TVs or ICT panels and internet, we bring structured digital learning to remote schools—bridging the rural-urban education divide. 3. Community Empowerment: Local youth are trained and employed as Coordinators, while government teachers receive training in technology and pedagogy—building local capacity and ownership. Through this model, Vidya Shakti empowers rural students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed academically and in life, while catalyzing long-term improvements in the public education system.
