What specific problem are you solving?
50% of the world lacks access to comprehensive health services. Two billion people face financial hardship due to out-of-pocket healthcare costs. In Nigeria, over 95% of the population, more than 200 million people live without health insurance, according to the Nigerian Demographic Health Survey 2018. This leaves millions of low-income Nigerians with just two heartbreaking options when they fall sick: borrow money and sink deeper into poverty or self-medicate, risking complications or death. Nigeria ranks 5th in global mortality rates and 3rd in maternal mortality—both preventable with timely, affordable care. The root causes? Deep poverty, lack of awareness, and health insurance premiums that are simply out of reach for the average Nigerian. HealthVest was created to break this deadly cycle. We're solving the crisis of unaffordable and inaccessible healthcare through affordable daily health micro-savings wallet, low-cost insurance, and 24/7 AI-powered medical advice via USSD, SMS, and hotline—in all local languages. We’re not just building tools; we’re building trust, saving lives, and restoring dignity to millions who’ve long been excluded from the healthcare system. This is more than innovation—it’s a fight for equity, survival, and the future of health in Africa.
What is your solution?
HealthVest is a USSD-based micro-savings wallet that allows users to save as little as 20 cents daily toward their health. These savings earn interest and can be invested to grow over time. Once a user has saved consistently, they get automatic access to low-cost health insurance coverage, covering hospital visits, emergencies, and essential treatments without out-of-pocket payments. To ensure constant access to care, the HealthVest AI provides 24/7 toll-free medical advice via SMS and phone calls, using AI technology trained in Nigerian languages and medical protocols. The AI uses a triage system to identify medical emergencies and urgencies to trigger a rapid referral chain to the closest health facility. The AI listens, assesses symptoms, gives advice, and refers emergencies to nearby health centers. Our platform uses simple, accessible technologies; USSD, mobile phones, and AI, to deliver financial protection, real-time medical guidance, and a clear path to better health. No internet, no apps, just healthcare that works for everyone, anywhere, anytime.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves low-income and underserved Nigerians, especially those living in rural and peri-urban communities where access to healthcare is limited or nonexistent. Low-income informal sector Nigerians who live below poverty levels (that is earn below $1.90-$2.15, less than $5 per day according to the World Bank). These individuals—farmers, market women, artisans, informal workers have low earning power and have no form of health health coverage. When illness strikes, they are required to pay out of pocket, either borrowing money they can’t repay or self-medicating, often with tragic consequences. They are not just underserved, they’re excluded from the health system. Many lack awareness of how health insurance works, cannot afford traditional premiums, and live far from quality healthcare facilities. How: 1. HealthVest helps them save tiny daily amounts for health, with interest and investment options to grow their funds. 2. HealthVest converts their savings into reliable health coverage without paperwork or financial stress. 3. HealthVest AI gives them 24/7 access to medical advice in their own language, even without internet. By blending technology with empathy, we restore dignity, reduce preventable deaths, and give every Nigerian, regardless of income or location, a real chance at living a healthy, secure life.
