What specific problem are you solving?
Research shows that early parenting interactions have a strong impact on a child's lifelong success than socioeconomic factors. Yet, millions of parents lack access to evidence-based, culturally relevant and jargon-free guidance about caregiving in the early years. Three-fourths of countries in the world lack comprehensive, structured parenting support systems, leaving families to navigate early childhood care with fragmented, inconsistent, and often unreliable information.
Online information sources overwhelm parents with contradictory, outdated content that is difficult to understand and culturally inappropriate, creating stress rather than providing clarity. These limitations disproportionately affect vulnerable families. Current digital solutions present significant barriers: English-language dominance, subscription requirements, dependence on stable internet connectivity, and inadequate accommodations for varying literacy levels. Consequently, millions of families in low-resource settings, remote areas, and emergency contexts remain excluded from essential parenting guidance.
This gap represents a critical public health concern with far-reaching implications. Children's developmental trajectories are shaped significantly during their first six years, establishing foundations for lifelong health, learning, and social outcomes. Addressing this disparity through accessible, evidence-based parenting support has tremendous potential to improve public health outcomes, reduce inequities, and empower vulnerable families worldwide.
What is your solution?
UNICEF co-created the Bebbo parenting app through strategic partnerships with governments and parents to address critical inequities in early childhood support. This innovative open-source digital public good delivers evidence-based guidance during the crucial developmental window from birth to six years.
Bebbo's architecture prioritizes accessibility and privacy by design, functioning seamlessly offline and storing all data locally on users' devices. The platform provides personalized, actionable information tailored to each child's developmental stage rather than overwhelming parents with excessive content at once.
The solution's distinctive value lies in its deep integration with existing health and education systems. By embedding Bebbo within government frameworks and training frontline workers on its utilization, the app is well positioned as an extension of public services rather than a standalone intervention.
Bebbo's localization model goes beyond translation, adapting content to align with national health protocols, cultural contexts, and regulatory environments in 15+ countries. This ensures that families in underserved communities receive appropriate guidance of comparable quality to those in resource-rich settings.
Through continuous engagement with service providers and strategic implementation partnerships, Bebbo has established a sustainable ecosystem that connects vulnerable families to services while reducing per-user costs as adoption scales—creating a cost-effective solution for universal parenting support.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
With over one million registered children on the platform, Bebbo serves diverse caregiving populations typically underrepresented in traditional parenting support frameworks:
• Primary caregivers across the spectrum: parents of young children navigating unfamiliar territory, working parents balancing competing demands, and extended family members assuming caregiving responsibilities
• Families with specific needs: parents of children with difficulties, premature infants, and those in single-parent or blended household structures
• Crisis-affected households: families experiencing displacement, conflict, or natural disasters, exemplified by our extensive implementation in Ukraine where Bebbo provides critical support to families affected by the ongoing conflict
• Service providers: healthcare workers, educators, and social service professionals seeking evidence-based tools to enhance their support to families
User feedback from more than 10,000 users reveals consistent improvements across key parenting domains:
• 80% report enhanced understanding of developmental milestones and health indicators
• 79% indicate increased confidence in their caregiving abilities
• 81% demonstrate more frequent engagement in developmentally appropriate activities
• 75% apply more effective approaches to managing challenging behaviors
By systematically bridging critical information gaps for traditionally underserved populations, Bebbo strengthens parenting capacity during the developmental window when it matters most for children's outcomes.
