What specific problem are you solving?
Uganda faces a critical shortage of healthcare professionals, with only one doctor per 10,000 people, far below the World Health Organization’s recommendation of 23 per 10,000. The patient doctor ratio is higher in rural areasof the country due to having health care professional concentrated in major cities. This creates a huge health access gap for millions of ugandans. To bridge this gap, clinical responsibilities have been shifted to mid-level health workers, such as nurses and clinical officers who often lack ongoing support and up-to-date knowledge to manage complex conditions. Misinformation from unregulated alternative medicine sources continues to mislead communities from seeking established modern health services. This has left majority of the population the country, over 35 million or 75% of the country's total population, residing in rural areas with limited access to quality health which is available at very high expenses not affordable to locals living below the poverty line. National wide 40% of the people live below the international povert line and the proportion is anticipated higher in rural areas.
What is your solution?
The Advanced Treatment Information Centre (ATIC) is a telemedicine/tollfree consultation hub that provides real-time medical support to health workers and accurate health information to the public across Uganda. It connects frontline health providers with medical experts and specialists through a toll-free call center, WhatsApp, and Interactive voice recording (IVR) sessions on prevailing diseases of public health importance. Through ATIC, health workers can call in to get immediate guidance on managing cases involving HIV, TB, non-communicable diseases, emerging infections, etc. Complex cases can be escalated to specialists via phone or video consultation. Patients and community members can also call to receive reliable health information, counseling, and referrals 24/7. ATIC also integrates with an eLearning platform offering online courses, podcasts, and virtual simulation trainings to support continuous professional development. Our solution intends to enhance the platform using MIT solve support by: -Conducting facility demos to raise awareness of ATIC services. -Hosting radio shows to inform the public about availability of ATIC services plus addressing health topics that have been most commonly in queries during a given period. -Upgrading our Learning and Innovations Information System to better capture and analyze data from calls.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution directly serves two key groups: health workers and the general public, especially those in rural and underserved areas of Uganda. Health workers—particularly mid-level providers such as nurses, clinical officers, and laboratory personnel—often manage complex conditions in settings with limited access to specialists or updated clinical guidance. These are underserved due to restricted physical capacity building opportunities, high patient loads, and the lack of accessible continuing professional development (CPD). ATIC empowers them with real-time expert consultation, up-to-date health learning materials which are shared digitally improving their ability to make informed decisions and deliver quality care. The general public, including patients, caregivers, youth, refugees and other vulnerable population, often struggle to access reliable health information. Misinformation—especially from unregulated sources—leads to delayed care, poor treatment adherence, and stigma around conditions like HIV, Hepatitis B and TB. Through its toll-free call center and WhatsApp ATIC provides trusted health education, counseling, and referral support in local languages, helping people make safer health decisions. By offering real-time health specialist support and easing access to CPD platforms and health information, ATIC improves health worker competence, enhances patient care quality, and builds community trust in the healthcare system.
