What specific problem are you solving?
Globally, and across many parts of Africa, women face life-threatening health issues due to late detection of conditions like breast cancer, cervical cancer, and reproductive health disorders. Over 60% of women diagnosed with breast cancer in sub-Saharan Africa present at advanced stages, drastically lowering survival rates. In Tanzania alone, cervical cancer is the leading cause of female cancer deaths, with over 10,000 new cases and 7,000 deaths annually (WHO, 2021). These outcomes are worsened by limited access to screening services, low health literacy, stigma, and delayed care-seeking behavior. Most affected are women in rural and underserved communities, where access to early screening and specialized care is almost nonexistent. Cultural norms, high costs, and lack of awareness prevent many from seeking timely care. Moreover, the healthcare system is under-resourced, with few specialists and limited public health outreach on women’s health.
What is your solution?
Livian Health is a digital platform that provides women with AI-powered self-screening tools and personalized health guidance to detect and manage reproductive and non-communicable health conditions early. The platform is accessible via mobile devices and guides users through simple, interactive assessments to evaluate symptoms and risk factors related to breast cancer, cervical cancer, fertility issues, and other key women’s health concerns. Using machine learning algorithms, the app analyzes user input to offer immediate insights and recommends next steps, such as visiting a clinic, booking an online consultation, or adopting preventive measures. The AI is trained with validated clinical data and regularly updated with guidance from medical professionals to ensure accuracy and cultural relevance. In addition, Livian Health includes health education content, menstrual tracking, and reminders for follow-up care, all designed to empower women to make informed health decisions. In the future, we plan to integrate telehealth features and connect users to local health services and NGOs.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Livian Health is designed to serve women and girls in low-resource and underserved communities, especially across sub-Saharan Africa. These women often lack access to early screening, reproductive health education, and affordable healthcare services. Many live in rural areas, face cultural stigma, and are unable to reach medical facilities in time, leading to late diagnosis of life-threatening conditions like breast and cervical cancer. Our solution empowers these women by offering self-screening tools, personalized health guidance, and digital education, all accessible via mobile phones. This enables them to detect symptoms early, make informed health decisions, and seek care proactively. Livian Health addresses barriers such as distance, cost, lack of information, and healthcare system delays, making preventive care more reachable. In the long term, Livian Health will also support community health workers and clinics by providing data insights that inform targeted interventions and follow-up care. By focusing on early detection and education, the platform aims to reduce preventable deaths and improve the quality of life for millions of women, especially those most often left behind by traditional healthcare systems.
