What specific problem are you solving?
In Manitoba, Canada, and globally, vulnerable individuals, including seniors, people with disabilities, and those with chronic conditions, face significant delays in accessing essential home care services. In Manitoba, as of 2024, there are approximately 9,597 individuals waiting for placement in licensed personal care homes, with wait times extending up to a year in some cases. This delay results in individuals experiencing deteriorating health, increased risk of injury, and diminished quality of life due to the lack of timely assistance with daily activities. Family caregivers, often without adequate support, face emotional and physical burnout as they attempt to manage caregiving responsibilities. The shortage of trained home care workers exacerbates this issue, with vacancy rates in Manitoba's Home Care Program reaching 33% in 2024. Globally, over 2 billion people lack access to essential health services, with home and long-term care being significant contributors to this crisis. This systemic failure disproportionately affects the most vulnerable populations, leading to preventable health complications and increased healthcare costs.
What is your solution?
Our solution bridges the gap in home care services for vulnerable individuals who are on long waitlists for government-funded care. We provide temporary home care support to individuals who are waiting for government services, ensuring they receive the necessary care in the interim. Our solution works in two parts: Respite Care for Vulnerable Individuals: We offer temporary, personalized care for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and those with chronic conditions. Trained caregivers provide services like personal care, medication reminders, mobility assistance, and household tasks. This care is available in two flexible models: continuous care (14 consecutive days) and flexible care (up to 14 days spread across six months). Home Care Workforce Hub: We empower and train a new workforce of caregivers, offering certifications and job-matching services. We create a centralized database of trained home care workers, facilitating easy matching between caregivers and individuals or institutions needing care. Our solution doesn’t rely on complex technology but leverages existing resources: trained caregivers, a digital database, and streamlined job-matching systems to optimize care delivery and workforce employment. This dual approach ensures that vulnerable individuals receive care when they need it, while simultaneously addressing the workforce shortage in home care.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves vulnerable, low-income individuals, including seniors, people with disabilities, and those with chronic health conditions, who are waiting for government-funded home care services. These individuals often face extended wait times due to budget constraints, administrative delays, and systemic resource shortages. Currently, this population is severely underserved. They lack access to essential care during the wait period, leading to deteriorating health, increased hospitalizations, and a loss of independence. Many also experience emotional and physical strain as family caregivers bear the burden of daily care without adequate support. Our solution directly addresses this gap by providing temporary, tailored home care to individuals while they wait for government services to become available. By offering personalized support in personal care, medication management, mobility assistance, and household tasks, we ensure these individuals maintain their health and well-being. Additionally, our Home Care Workforce Hub empowers the workforce by providing training, certification, and job-matching services, creating sustainable employment opportunities while ensuring a skilled caregiving workforce is available to meet growing demand. This solution will improve health outcomes, reduce caregiver burnout, and enhance the quality of life for individuals who are currently left without support, ensuring they remain safe, dignified, and independent.
