What specific problem are you solving?
Across Africa, millions face traumatic experiences—conflict, incarceration, displacement, or disaster—yet mental health support remains deeply inaccessible. According to the WHO, one in five people in conflict-affected regions suffer from depression, anxiety, PTSD, or other disorders. In many African countries, there are fewer than 1 psychiatrist per 100,000 people, and mental health services are either nonexistent or highly stigmatized. In Tunisia, a 2024 study conducted with NGO BEDER and Hôpital Razi found that 78% of young former detainees showed PTSD symptoms, while 50% suffered from severe depression—yet less than 10% received any form of psychological support post-release. This psychological burden leads to cycles of isolation, addiction, violence, and reoffending, particularly among youth.
Meanwhile, refugees and disaster-affected communities experience similar traumas, compounded by language barriers, mobility issues, and lack of internet access. Standard clinical models often fail to reach or engage them. There is a pressing need for an alternative—one that is accessible, empathetic, localized, and scalable. IndaSoul addresses this exact gap
What is your solution?
IndaSoul is a hybrid digital mental health platform combining an AI-powered voice and chat-based companion with a human peer-support network. Accessible via mobile app, SMS, or voice, IndaSoul allows vulnerable individuals to speak to a friendly, multilingual chatbot trained in trauma-informed conversational care. The bot listens empathetically, offers breathing exercises, stress relief tips, and tracks emotional well-being over time. Crucially, if the system detects signs of acute distress or loneliness, it can connect users with trained peer supporters—community-based volunteers who’ve lived similar experiences and are coached in basic psychosocial care.
Built in Tunisia through our work with ex-detainees, IndaSoul’s design is culturally adapted and informed by local insights. Its architecture is optimized for low bandwidth, offline interactions, and illiteracy—making it usable even in refugee camps or disaster zones. With voice-first features, localized language support, and seamless escalation to human interaction, IndaSoul offers both scale and depth. It is not just a chatbot; it’s a safe space, a lifeline, and a bridge between vulnerable individuals and the help they need
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
IndaSoul is designed for vulnerable populations in Africa who are currently underserved or excluded from mental health services. Our core focus includes:
• Formerly incarcerated youth: Often facing trauma and stigma post-release.
• Refugees and internally displaced persons: Struggling with grief, trauma, and disrupted access to care.
• Youth exposed to violence: In post-conflict or high-risk environments.
• Disaster-affected communities: Experiencing loss, uncertainty, and isolation.
By combining scalable AI with a network of trained peers, IndaSoul empowers individuals to manage distress, access help safely, and rebuild resilience. We provide a first step toward healing and reconnection in contexts where traditional models fail
