What specific problem are you solving?
India generates over 90 million tons of crop residue annually, much of which is burned, contributing to 30% of northern India's seasonal air pollution. Simultaneously, over 3.5 million tons of plastic packaging waste is produced each year, with most of it non-recyclable and environmentally hazardous. The lack of affordable, scalable, and compostable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics aggravates the waste crisis, especially in emerging economies. Globally, plastic production emits over 1.8 billion metric tons of CO₂e annually, while crop burning contributes heavily to particulate pollution and GHG emissions. Existing bioplastics rely on food crops, require industrial composting, or are expensive imports—none of which suit India's infrastructure or farmer economy. There is a pressing need for decentralized, affordable solutions that simultaneously solve plastic pollution and crop residue management, while building value chains that work for underserved rural and peri-urban communities.
What is your solution?
AgroWorks by Evoxia Labs is a patented bioplastics platform that converts agricultural residues such as wheat and paddy straw into rigid, home-compostable bioplastic granules. These granules are used in packaging formats such as bottles, containers, and blister packs—directly replacing conventional plastics without needing new industrial equipment. Our technology integrates fiber modification, thermochemical processing, and bio-based polymer synthesis to produce a durable, fully compostable material. Alongside the bioplastics, the process generates high-value co-products—biochar (used for carbon sequestration and soil health) and bio-oil, which we convert into biodegradable PBS (polybutylene succinate). The entire solution is designed to be zero-waste and carbon-efficient, providing an environmentally safe and economically viable alternative to both plastic waste and stubble burning. Our granules are priced at ₹95/kg—on par with conventional PET—making it one of the most cost-effective and accessible bioplastics globally.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
AgroWorks serves two main groups: (1) rural farmers who face seasonal bans and fines for crop residue burning, and (2) urban industries and consumers looking for sustainable packaging. For farmers, we provide an economic alternative to burning by monetizing agro-waste through decentralized sourcing partnerships. This helps improve rural livelihoods while reducing pollution and CO₂ emissions. For businesses—especially FMCG, e-commerce, and healthcare packaging users—AgroWorks offers a cost-effective, compostable packaging material that meets EPR and ESG targets. These industries often lack access to scalable alternatives to rigid plastics, especially those that are both compostable and drop-in compatible with current manufacturing lines. Consumers benefit from safer, microplastic-free products that decompose in household compost systems. By closing the loop between agricultural waste and urban consumption, AgroWorks creates inclusive value across rural, industrial, and environmental dimensions—supporting a circular economy that benefits people and planet.
