What specific problem are you solving?
During the first phase of the SCA Basic Digital Literacy Program, a beneficiary shared that although her husband and children each owned a computer, she had never learned how to turn one on. Her story highlights a persistent societal belief that women are less capable of understanding “complex systems,” reinforcing deep‑rooted gender inequalities in digital access and confidence.
More than 50% of Nigerians are digitally illiterate, lacking essential skills needed to participate in a technology‑driven economy. Women and girls are disproportionately affected, as cultural norms and limited opportunities discourage them from pursuing technology‑related skills or applying digital tools in work, business, or daily life. In a country of over 200 million people, without targeted support, girls from low‑income communities will remain excluded from the digital ecosystem—further widening gender pay gaps that already cost low‑ and middle‑income countries an estimated $160 trillion in lifetime earnings (World Bank).
This issue also reflects a broader national challenge: even individuals with basic digital knowledge struggle to integrate AI into their workflows and businesses. This gap limits productivity and innovation across key sectors such as retail, healthcare, agriculture, supply chain, and security, ultimately reinforcing the multidimensional poverty experienced by many Nigerians.
What is your solution?
Our solution is the establishment of an Innovative Learning Hub that would serve as the go-to place for members of underseved community in Lagos, Nigeria. This Hub will enable SCA reach community members with little to no digital skills, who would typically miss out on virtual programs or training, to those with intimate skills who have not fully integrated AI into their routine application.
The hub will provide free and affordable training on AI, basic digital literacy, software development with AI, product design with AI, and machine learning, and will be accessible to members of various economic backgrounds.
In 2025, She Code Africa won the HP Digital Equity Accelerator grant and was awarded $100,000 worth of hardware, with the support of S&P Global. SCA would be able to establish the hub and equip it with this hardware.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our AI Literacy Program is designed for young women and girls aged 18 to 24 in Lagos, in communities like Agege, Egbeda, and Mushin, Nigeria, who are curious and eager to learn but lack the access, exposure, and opportunity that would position them with future-ready skills.
In this community, 90% of women and girls come from low-income or underserved communities. The program tackles these issues by offering community-centered AI literacy training with hands-on practice, mentorship, and career insight. Participants learn how AI works, how to use AI tools responsibly, and how to apply AI to real tasks and new job roles. Beyond technical skills, the program also builds confidence, critical thinking, communication, and ethical reasoning—skills needed for long-term success.
Furthermore, establishing our SCA Hub will be a physical destination where girls feel accepted and well-trained for tech roles in AI.
