The Problem
In Vanuatu, only 33% of households have access to electricity. With 75% of the population living in rural areas, an estimated 85–90% remain without power. Energy poverty disproportionately impacts women, affecting health, safety, and economic opportunity, further entrenching existing gender inequalities.
The Solution
Our solution is a women-led, renewable energy system for climate-vulnerable, off-grid island communities in Vanuatu. ActionAid Australia, ActionAid Vanuatu, PowerWells, and Women-I-TokTokTugeta (WITTT) are partnering to support women deliver clean energy to rural communities across Vanuatu.
Local women are trained to install, maintain, repair, and cyclone-proof solar systems, building lasting technical capacity and green jobs. Solar home systems made from repurposed e-waste, community batteries, and streetlights power households, schools, and public spaces, improving women’s safety.
Each home unit features a 40W solar panel, 110Wh battery, four LED lights, two USB ports, and PAYGO functionality. Economic hubs, powered by repurposed EV batteries, solar panels, and inverters, support energy-intensive tools like sewing machines, refrigerators, and food processors, enabling women to drive their financial independence.
This model delivers clean, affordable solar energy to facilitate climate-resilient infrastructure that strengthens communities, advances gender equality, and builds lasting economic empowerment through food security and livelihood activities.
Stats
115 households, an estimated 800 people, benefited from solar energy installations in the pilot village.
