BERJET Supplies Company Limited
Our services include; Organising and Training smallholder farmer groups in best agronomic practices, Development of Value Chain Models, Provision of Crop Insurance Cover for smallholder farmers, Provision of Value Chain Financing to smallholder farmers and creation of Market Access for smallholder farmers.
BERJET Supplies Company Limited would be a fresh fruits and vegetables supplier for households, institutions and individuals in the main three northern regions of Ghana. This area records the nation’s highest poverty rate, and the last among all the regions, according to the Ghana Statistics Service.
About 80% of the rural population in Ghana lives between 4 to 6 months of Household food insecurity, and the 3 Northern regions are the most affected
To impact the communities in which we operate, we organise and train smallholder farmer groups in best agronomic practices, thus creating jobs and markets for their produce.Poverty has a firm grip on rural areas in Ghana and most Sub-Saharan African countries, and millions of people lack access to sufficient high quality food. Even where natural resources are available, people suffer from chronic undernourishment because they lack access to agricultural financing, quality seed and fertilizer, ready market, agricultural education and training, and insurance against natural disasters. This has resulted in the acquisition and consumption of sub-standard fruits and vegetables in market. Smallholder farmers do not have the requisite resources to produce what the consumer actually want. Therefore, the people in this geographical extent don't get healthy fruits and vegetables to consume.
BERJET Supplies Company Limited shall focus on improving agriculture in Ghana by creating markets for the smallholder farmer. The narrative remains that a typical Ghanaian smallholder farmer lacks the necessary resources to transform their subsistence farm into an Income Generating Agribusiness.
With your support from the investor community, we shall address these current agricultural issues through innovative agriculture solutions. You the Investor Community can help us provide the necessary financial services and training that will help farmers increase their crop yields, improve income and food security for their families and communities, and create jobs for their neighbors.
Our solution is to produce and supply fresh fruits and vegetables in collaboration with smallholder farmers in rural areas.
We shall take the raw fruits and vegetables and process, package and shelf them in the shopping mall for our high-end fruits and vegetables consumers.
We shall Organise and train them on the G-CAP Standard Certification in farming in order to meet international standards. Apart from that, we also have two social intervention models that will gather and train over 10000 rural smallholder fruits and vegetable farmers across the northern regions of Ghana. These farmers will receive pre-financing from the company to produce the fruits and vegetables on their own farmlands, and then given a shelf space at the shopping mall by the company to stock their own produce. At the end of the business day, sales history is printed for each produce sold, and the space rent is deducted from the sales and the remaining amount deposited into the bank account of the Farmers Association. At the end of the period, the pre-financing loan is paid back, and the farmers come together as one association and do a Profit Sharing Arrangement under the supervision of BERJET Supplies Company Limited.
Our customers are primarily Shopping Malls, Hotels, Restaurants, Food Venders, Beverage and Food Processing Companies, Cottage Industry Owners and Small Retail Shops and High-end individual consumers in the mass market. Our survey indicates that there is no single well established fresh fruits and vegetables shopping mall in all the three northern regions of Ghana. According to the 2010 Population and Housing Census, the total population of the three Northern Regions currently stands at 4,228,116 people. We are currently targeting 30% of this market segment representing 1,268,434.80.
We are estimating that if we get external investment of US$10000, we will be able to create between 10000 and 30000 direct jobs and indirect jobs in rural Ghana given that each of the 10000 smallholder farmers is able to employ 3 paid family members in their farms. This will translate into multiple income generation for these folk who traditionally depended on rain-fed crop farming for their livelihoods. Smallholder farmers working together in groups to produce larger quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables and to process them for a collective profit sharing will foster unity and mutual coexistence eliminating tribal conflicts and minor disputes that are prevalent among revered traditional men in Northern Ghana.
- Improve supply chain practices to reduce food loss, scale new business models for producer-market connections, and create low-carbon cold chains
Our solution is to produce and supply fresh fruits and vegetables to corporate institutions and high-end individual consumption and households in Ghana. This shall be done using an ultra-modern fresh fruits and vegetables shopping mall where the smallholder farmers produce shall be stocked in various shelves. The narative is that, each smallholder farmer is encouraged to advertised the various fresh fruits and vegetables that are in the shopping mall to the general public in order to stay in business. This is deliberate because, the produce in the shopping mall belongs to the farmers.
- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea
- A new business model or process
Our solution is to create market access for smallholder farmers in Ghana through the formation of nucleus farmer groups to produce various kinds of fruits and vegetables for the West African Food Markets.
At BERJET Supplies Company Limited, we are Building a new reality for our Smallholder Farmers, we are creating Food Security for our clients in the future and we are designing a New and Sustainable Agricultural Value Chain Model for the socioeconomic development of our country.
BERJET Supplies Company Limited shall buy fresh agricultural produce grown in Northern Ghana by smallholder farmers and supply to Food Exporting Companies, Food Processing Companies, Poultry Farmers and the Mass Market through an ultra-modern Fruits and Vegetables Shopping Mall. We will start with supplies of 50000MT of fresh fruits and vegetables in 2020 to 100000MT by 2023. Our produce stands out from that of the competition because of guaranteed quality. In the past one year, demand for fresh produce in Ghana exceeded the quantities that farmers were able to supply and this has necessitated us to go into partnership with 500+ smallholder farmers in the Northern Region of Ghana. BERJET Supplies Company Limited shall trade and market all types of foods, grains and fresh fruits and vegetables, significantly reducing post-harvest losses by cold storage. The ultimate vision is to increase income for smallholder farmers in the supply chain by eliminating factors leading to post-harvest losses such as poor transportation, lack of storage facilities and middlemen.
To ensure quality production it is essential to utilize the latest and most efficient assembly technology. Keeping abreast with technological developments will ensure we gain, and maintain, a competitive advantage utilizing the latest production techniques. To this end, we shall acquire a Multi-purpose machine that can dry, sort, clean and package the fresh fruits and vegetables. Improvements in our technology will include the use of automated selecting, sorting, cleaning, drying and packaging machines which will allow for increased standardization and acceptability of our produce in the international market. A second farming season through the introduction of Solar Irrigation Systems for our smallholder farmers in rural areas will increase the volumes of fresh green produce in the Northern Region, and ensure constant supply of produce to our clients all year round. The use of solar irrigation technology in the farming communities in rural areas in Ghana will ensure that, no smallholder farmer will sit idle again throughout the year. After the main crop season, they will continue with the induced crop season using irrigation technology. We will group smallholder farmers to benefit from this technology. We are currently in the process of signing MOU’s with Muchinga General Entreprises, Zambia, and Suncity Engineering Company in Egypt to supply our smallholder farmers with these Solar Irrigation Systems. This Technology would counter the adverse effects of drought in the northern region of Ghana. High-technology Information System upgrades will improve all aspects of our business, especially Drones, Automatic Weather Station, Crop Insurance and Inventory Control.
The technology we are adopting is an already existing model in most past of sub-Saharan Africa where the predominant economic activity is small scale farming. Peasant farmers in Ghana depend on the natural rainfall for their farming activities.
To this end, many economies in Africa have resolved to include irrigation technology systems in their national agriculture. This has also yielded the needed results for them and has increased their crop yield and economic fortunes over the years.
We have therefore decided to partner with Muchinga General Entreprises in Zambia to purchase and install this irrigation technology which has been tried and tested successfully. We are also into discussing with Sun City Technology Systems in Egypt for a similar but more efficient technology to be introduced to our smallholder farmers here in Ghana.
