Solution Overview
Solution Name:
Sustainable living solutions
One-line solution summary:
solving hunger and poverty challenges by using simple available resources by using permaculture and organic farming
Pitch your solution.

In  the  communities  across  my  nation there  is  alot  of  suffering  the  biggest  challenges  is hunger  which  result  in low  food  production  due  to  lack  of  inputs  to  feed  the  soil and  lack  of  knowledge, prices  for chemical  fertilizers  is  beyond  reach  for  majority , this  in  the  long  run  create  poverty  and  diseases . My  project  is  looking  at  addressing these  challenges .

The  solutions  proposed  is production  of  organic fertilizers  by  using  available  local  resources ie animal  which  mostly  every  household  has .And  locally  grown  plants  that  are  reach  in nutrients  need  to  feed the  soil  for  good  yields .

The  solutions  can  change  lives  as  it  will  make  every  household  to  afford  to  grow  enough  food  and  excess  the  can  sale  to  reduce  or  eradicate  the  effects  of poverty . The  tools  to  be  used  are permaculture  and  organic  farming  principals  which  can  be  scaled  up globally

Film your elevator pitch.
What specific problem are you solving?

The  specific  problem  am  solving is  hunger this  is  not  only  lack  of  staple  food  but  generally  having  nothing  to  eat .  The  population  which  is  affected  is  50 %  country  wide ,  the  idea  is  to  start  within the  catchment  area  of  800, 000  families   and  scale up  to other  districts.

Factors  that  are  contributing  to  hunger

*  High  cost  of  chemical  fertilizers  which  majority  cant  afford  to  buy.

* Lack  of  knowledge  to produce  organic  fertilizers by  using  locally  available  resources

*  Presence  of  other  organisations  that  gives  food  handouts  and  cash transfers however  not  in  sustainable  way .

* Post  harvest  losses

*  Poor  extension  services

* Lack  of  clear  and  effective  government  policies

*  Lack  of  infrastructure  development

* Lack  of  irrigation  technologies  for  the  rural  people

* climate  change that  results  in  erratic  rainfalls

What is your solution?

The  solution  is  to equip  people  with  skills  in  peramaculture  and  organic  farmers .

Permaculture  is  simply  permanent  agriculture it  revolves  around  3  ethics  , care  for  people , care  for  earth  and fare share . Example  most  farmers  the  burn  whatever  is  left  after  harvesting .They  don't  consider  that  in  doing  so  they  are  damaging  soils and polluting  the  air  besides they  are  supposed  to  share  back  into  the  soil  the  agriculture  waste . With  training  people  will  realise  that  they  actually  burn  money  and  their   livelihood .

Organic  farming uses methods  of  producing  food without using chemical  fertilizers  which  are  very  expensive.It  uses  mostly  things  are  thrown  away  and  considered as  waste.

The  processes  in  permacuture  and  organic  farming  are  in  producing  health  food , promoting  seed  saving  culture as mostly  hybrid  or shop  seeds are  unaffordable  to  many . It  uses  waste  from agriculture  and animals  to  make  manure  through  composting  processes , which  at  local  level  does  not  require  machinery. It  promotes  production  of  organic  vegetables as relish. It  has  a  self  regulatory  cycle ,  waste produces manure to feed  soils  then soils  produces food  for  people and animals  waste turns  back  to  soils

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?

The  target  population  is  the  rural  communities  who  are  mostly  vulnerable  and  often  times  depends  on handouts  from  non  governmental  organisations , government , well  wishers  and  charities. Mostly  will be  the  widows, aged  , orphans and  marginalized  people . I  have  worked  with  some families  as  models helping  them  to  set  up  gardens  and  the  trials has  been  very  successful. I  have  engaged  them allowing  them  to identify  their  problems  and  work out  possible  solutions  and  support  them  in  bringing  in  simple  innovations and  see  together  the  results . The  solution  will  direct address  their  needs as they  have  locally  available  resources  to  start  with  mostly  it  requires  their  energy  and  no  money  involved . Going  forward  is  self regulatory  concept  and  sustainable .  The knowledge  sharing  component  enables  the  solution  to  address  challenges   to  the   generations to  come . It  solves  other  world  issues  like  permaculture  promotes  reafforestation  which preserves  water  and mitigate  climate .Solves  social  challenges  like  theft  as  most  people  will  have  food .

Which dimension of the Challenge does your solution most closely address?
  • Promote the shift towards low-impact, diverse, and nutritious diets, including low-carbon protein options
Explain how the problem, your solution, and your solution’s target population relate to the Challenge and your selected dimension.

The  problem  is hunger and  poverty  to  be addressed   and  the  solution is to  equip  the  people  with  knowledge  and  skills  of  solving  these.The  target  population  has  no  permanent  solutions to  their problems ,  This  solution  will  solve  their  problems  permanently is  cheap  , self  regulatory , specific  , measurable  , realistic  and  timely . It  will  look  at  their  strength which  is  land  availability   and their  energy , the  weaknesses being  lack  of  skills  and knowledge , opportunities  the  availability    of my  organisation  to equip them.
