Environmental Education in Emergencies (EEE)
- Pre-Seed
Provide learning, skills and employment opportunities to youth in Gaza, through an accredited learning programme so that they can actively contribute towards combatting environmental risks.
- Provide an accredited course (in partnership with MIT) to educate and activate young people in Gaza in environmental sciences fit for their context.
- Educating and empowering young people to understand environmental risks and as well as identify solutions suitable to their context. Inspire and support young people to take ownership to protect and preserve their environment.
- With the opportunity to scale up this initiative, successful completion of the course will create a talent pool of local environmental and energy experts, which currently do not exist - at present most experts in this sector are external/international experts - that can contribute to finding long term solutions to the extreme environmental and energy crisis in Gaza.
The worsening environmental and energy crisis in Gaza poses a serious existential threat to the 2 million population. While exacerbating the humanitarian crisis, environmental risks are not prioritised as part of the ‘emergency response’.
The local population is familiar with the impact of environmental degradation but has limited understanding of a) how to measure environmental risk and b) how to mitigate environmental risk.
The population is reliant on external actors and experts to address environmental impacts in areas such as WASH and livelihoods, with limited local capacity or knowledge to address the long term challenges.
There is a critical knowledge gap between the needs and capacity of the local population.
Provide relevant learning opportunity to young people in Gaza so that they can become agents of change in protecting and preserving their environment.
The accredited learning course will educate and activate young people to better understand and respond to the needs of their local context.
Where youth unemployment is amongst the highest in the world, this initiative will create employment opportunities for young people in a sector currently monopolised by external actors and aid agencies.
Supporting young people to take ownership and ensure sustainable change.
The impact of this initiative will be to meet a critical knowledge gap in the environmental sector in Gaza by providing the tools and knowledge to young people to understand and mitigate environmental risks to help them protect and preserve their future.
By providing an accredited learning opportunity, young people will be able to seek employment opportunities in a new/emerging sector.

The context and needs of the Gaza strip are unique in the environmental risks that are present and the solutions that are possible given the complex political environment and lack of capacity of the local population.
Given the restrictions on access and movement - both for people and goods - there is a desperate need for more innovative energy solutions and ideas around environmental protection.
By providing an educational opportunity for young people to learn about alternative energy and environmental protection this initiative can embed ownership and innovation in a local context, to respond to a a looming existential threat.
This initiative is based on the core principles of human-centred design, by supporting individuals to take ownership and become active citizens of change - not only for themselves, but for their communities and future generations.
The initiative will be piloted via an established educational institute or organisation in the local setting and available for individuals between the age of 18-25.
The course will be made available to students who have an interest in environmental sciences or some prior experience in this field.
The course will include a mandatory component of delivering/sharing learning outcomes to younger peers at high school age, through organised workshops.

In the absence of a political solution in this region, the local populations have demonstrated immense resilience and innovation in the face of ongoing challenges and suffering.
We hope that by connecting with Solve and an esteemed institution such as MIT we can harness and develop that innovative spirit further to find solutions that go beyond humanitarian aid and charity. To support ownership, creativity, entrepreneurship and opportunities for young people that have nothing but conflict most of their lives.
