Mumspring Foundation
- Nigeria
Every year, over 2 million newborns die due to mostly preventable causes. Quality care during the antenatal period increase the chances of survival for mother and child.
So far, the Mumspring Foundation has provided free antenatal education and birth kits to 2000 at-risk women.
The Elevate Prize will significantly reinforce and extend our foundation's capacity to fund free healthcare and nutrition support for mothers and infants.
$100 ensures provides one year of support including:
a. monthly antenatal and postnatal health education in her mother tongue;
b. a birth kit to ensure an infection-free delivery;
d. vaccination reminders after baby is born;
e. a dedicated toll-free round-the-clock tele-consultation;
f. prenatal and postnatal supplements;
g. empowerment programs to enable the woman earn;
h. a nutritionally balanced food pack for mother and child post-delivery.
Over the next year, our goal is to support 5000 women. To do that, we need $500,000. The Elevate Prize would position us to reach that goal.
The network that comes with the Prize will help us create strategic alliances that will further the cause of maternal and newborn health, drive action in women's health issues globally and extend our reach to millions of underserved women around the world.
When my second child was born she was unable to breathe. While I willed her to live, I experienced a myriad of distressing emotions. Although my child survived, I know of many others who didn't. Annually, millions are lost to preventable maternal and newborn deaths.
My experience drove me to find solutions to maternal and newborn death and this is how Mumspring and the Mumspring Foundation were birthed. The Mumspring foundation leverages Mumspring’s SaaS product Agnes, to save lives and provide round-the-clock medical support to thousands of women.
I have always been driven by an innate desire to make a difference in the world. Personally, I measure impact by how much life-changing value I can bring to anyone or any situation. I am on a mission to build a legacy of enduring global impact by saving lives and changing minds, one community at a time.
My goal for the future is to lead innovation and conversations that can shape women's healthcare and to elevate opportunities for women with sustainable mentorship, training, and sponsorship.
The social impact influencer status that comes with the prize will enable me to spark and champion change for a better world, especially for women and children.
Globally, 2 million+ newborns die annually. Over 50% of those deaths happen in Africa. Within Africa, Nigeria has the highest number of newborn deaths.
Some of the factors that lead to neonatal and maternal deaths include poor health choices made during pregnancy due to ignorance of the associated risks. Antenatal education empowers women to make decisions that improve their chances of survival during their pregnancy and childbirth. Women who receive antenatal education and attend antenatal clinics regularly are more likely to survive than those that don’t.
Our solution provides the following:
⁃ Weekly antenatal education via programmatically delivered voice calls in local languages
⁃ Daily text reminders to ensure supplement/medication adherence
⁃ Vaccination reminders via text messages
⁃ Toll-free access to a teleconsultation via mobile
⁃ Birth kits
⁃ Prenatal and Postnatal supplements
⁃ Empowerment Programs to open up earning opportunities for the women
- Nutritious food packs
Through the provision of these services, we observed increased attendance at the antenatal clinics among women we have supported and survival rates that surpass the national and local average. The localization of the antenatal education and provision of same in audio is particularly important to foster assimilation for women who are illiterate.
Our approach is innovative because the inclusive and intuitive human-centered design of our SaaS products guarantees their effectiveness in solving maternal and newborn health challenges.
The innovation of our solution stems from our user-centered approach to product development. Rather than building an app or website to provide health information to the user, we looked at what they had readily available and built everything around that. This allowed us to provide relatively "advanced" features to an often marginalized or unreachable demographic.
Another innovation is the back-end database. We are providing the state-run primary healthcare network of clinics with information on users that they do not have on any other channel. Also, we provide services, also not previously made available to the demographic, such as surveys and health education from home.
The final innovation is the modular build of the software, which facilitates extension and integration with other platforms.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out a vision for a world free from poverty, hunger and disease.
Health has a central place in SDG 3 “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”, underpinned by 13 targets. Our work is directly aimed at achieving two of those targets namely:
3.1 By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100 000 live births.
3.2 By 2030, end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age, with all countries aiming to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1,000 live births and under-5 mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1000 live births.
To drive the achievement of the SDG targets listed above, we plan to continue to evolve our work by ensuring every woman receives quality perinatal and pediatric care by 2030, regardless of her socio-economic status. Achieving this feat will mean millions of lives saved.
The Mumspring Foundation is actively preserving the sanctity of human life and improving the quality of life for women who are traditionally forgotten and underserved, with intentional data-driven human-centered technology and outreach support.
