What specific problem are you trying to solve?

We are attempting to solve the poverty and youth unemployment problem. In an attempt to address these challenges in Nigeria, we have identified quality education, career counseling, vocational education, and entrepreneurship as viable solutions. The Nigerian National Bureau of Statistics said in 2020 that 40% or 83 million. Nigerians live in poverty, and Unemployment Rate in Nigeria increased to 33.30 percent in the fourth quarter of 2020 from 27.10 percent in the second quarter of 2020. The high rate of unemployment in Nigeria has significantly contributed to the dramatic rise in social vices and crimes such as Niger Delta militancy, Boko Haram insurgency, armed robbery, prostitution, abject poverty, and poor economy of the nation. Many people see vocational education as an option for those that are not privileged to go to school, meanwhile, it is meant to be part of the school curriculum. The reason we have lots of unemployed graduates in Africa is that society and parents believe more in getting educated in order to seek a good job rather than to create a good job. Many students also have the challenge of choosing the right career path or profession, which has also resulted in a radical increase in the youth unemployment rate in our society. Our target is to increase the number of people with relevant skills for financial success. By 2030, we will substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs, and entrepreneurship.

Who does your solution serve? In what ways will the solution impact their lives?

Our target audiences are students, undergraduates, graduates, school dropouts, job seekers, and young entrepreneurs. We are working to address the employability gap and youth unemployment problem through our online learning platform that is needed in the post-COVID era because the coronavirus has disrupted the traditional delivery model of education. In addition to digital education and eLearning. E-Learning has completely transformed the way in which learning is imparted to students.  Today's learners want relevant, mobile, self-paced, and personalized content. This need is fulfilled with the online mode of learning where students can learn at their comfort and pace. Students can easily access the content on any device with the internet. We keep track of student progress and ensure that they are headed in the right direction.

We also coach and help students and youths to choose the right career path that suits their passion, potentials, personal traits, and purpose in life. We transform education through digital training and career planning to promote employability and entrepreneurship. We give students and youths access to relevant information about Capacity Building, Personal/Professional Development Training, and other opportunities. We equip students, graduates, and young professionals with future-focused skills relevant to the 21st-century workplace. Our team goes to secondary schools to coach students with emphasis on helping them to discover, develop and deploy their talent by organizing entrepreneurship workshops in their respective schools to prepare them for life after school. We partner with professionals to train our team on Business and Professional Development.

What steps have you taken to understand the needs of the population you want to serve?

The platform was launched this year 2020 during the COVID 19 lockdown. We have about 95 students on the platform, and their certificate is automatically generated after they have completed their courses.

Within last year, I collaborated with professionals who are already in the business to train and mentor 260 youths to start up their businesses and I am connecting those who lack the capital to job opportunities and get free or affordable training for employability and entrepreneurship. I chose this work because graduates need to acquire employability skills that are relevant to the 21st-century workplace, and many students are confused about the right career path to choose, which has led to a radical increase in the youth unemployment rate in our society. I have mentored 1275 students to discover, develop, and deploy their talents in a suitable career path. It is important to me because the best labor market entry path for young people remains a good basic education, vocational training or higher education, initial work experience, and career planning.

We are at the start-up stage. We have tested the markets by sending proposals to 35 schools in Lagos. We have tested the business with graduates and school dropouts by organizing Youth Entrepreneurship Development Training. We have piloted the business for 2years by facilitating vocational skills training in my community, but the setback was low turnout because many youths in my community have not started a business before. We couldn’t achieve much because of a lack of finance.

Which aspects of the Challenge does your solution most closely address?
  • Improving learning opportunities and outcomes for learners across their lifetimes, from early childhood on (Learning)
Our solution's stage of development:
  • Growth: An organization with an established product, service, or business model rolled out in at least one community, which is poised for further growth
Explain why you selected this stage of development for your solution—in other words, what have you accomplished to date?

I started by organizing a youth development project by facilitating vocational skills to train youths in my community, but the setback was low turnout because many youths in my community have not started a business before. The project goals are to equip youths with all the necessary skills to make them entrepreneurs and job creators, and train youths on entrepreneurship and vocational skills acquisition, career development workshops, and render mentoring, coaching services, and business consultation services.

I have to collaborate with professionals who are already in the business to train and mentor 257 youths to start up their businesses and I am connecting those for lack capital to job opportunities from the Lagos State Employability Support Program to get free training for employability and entrepreneurship. Most career workshops always go in one direction (focusing on white-collar jobs) neglecting the artisans, technicians, and the likes. An artisan like a carpenter is not regarded as a career person but an accountant in a bank is seen as a career person, this is the error in our education, which must be corrected to eradicate poverty.
