AwayZone - Your Zone Away From Home
There are three problems that greatly effect the economic strength of minority communities. One, minority business owners disproportionately face the issue of lack of access and awareness to consumer markets in which to successfully sell their products, goods, or services. Two, that same lack of awareness effects consumers. If they do not know of the existence of these unique businesses they can not go there to support. Three, bridging the gap between the business owner and the consumer has been challenging because of the algorithmic bias that effects how minority owned businesses are found on mainstream search engines and business directories. The solution is to provide business owners and consumers a tool they can use to find each other based on their shared cultural histories. The AwayZone mobile app will help business owner and consumers overcome those obstacles.
According to a study done by the Kaufman Foundation, one of the major gaps hindering the financial performance of minority owned firms is lack of awareness and access to consumer markets in which to successfully sell their products. This is confirmed by an analysis conducted by the US Minority Business Development Agency where, in 2016, they reported $378,000 performance difference between minority business owners and their non-minority counterparts. The issue of awareness and access transfers over to the consumer as well. If they don’t know the who, what or where, they can’t go there thus creating a disconnect between business owners and the customers who would be willing to spend money with those businesses. New America, a U.S. bipartisan think tank, published a report explaining how algorithmic bias in administrative processes and data collection "limits access to resources for those who need the resources most, and amplifies the effects of systemic historical discrimination".
AwayZone Inc. was established to create equity and prosperity for the racial, ethnic, religious affiliation or sexual orientation minority business owners who exist in the Arts and Entertainment, Beauty, Fashion and Retail, Health and Wellness, Food/Drink and Hospitality and Humanities (places of worship) industries. Through our on-boarding process, we help these owners understand that the AwayZone platform and mobile app gives them access to the marketing technology, travel and tourism, mobile application, and shared economy markets. Based on their business description, we will identify which area meets their objectives and work to ensure their exposure in that market. Additionally, the AwayZone platform has international implications as it could serve rural communities in developing countries that would like to promote and sell their home industry products to the first world in order to create disposable income.
The AwayZone® mobile app is built around cultural access that will connect business owners and service providers who represent a racial, ethnic, religious affiliation or sexual orientation minority group to consumers who are looking for culturally specific goods, services, and experiences. The app works by having the user select cultural identifiers, they then select the business or services of choice, then by matching technology, they receive culturally specific, up-to-date, usable information on the minority owned businesses in the area with full information on how to access those places whether it be a physical location or an eCommerce website. Consumers can now quickly and efficiently find the goods, services, and experiences that meet their cultural expectations.
