MURINZI Mobile Handwashing Station
Over 829 000 people in low- and middle-income countries die as a result of inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene each year, representing 60% of total diarrhoea deaths, every 4 seconds we are losing a child .
40% of the Africans have no ready access to Sanitation facilities, and there are communities in remote areas without ready access to electricity.
rising in demand for electronic products is causing rapid increase of E-wastes that have some Harmful components to the human and environment (more specifically for climate change )
We have shared the Link to videos demonstrating the developed solution, but let's talk about it briefly .
Murinzi"Kinyarwanda name referred as the Guardian " smart mobile Hand wash station, was developed with aim of reducing Hygiene Related diseases, to save million lives of people who are suffering from lack of access to sanitation facilities , it is self-contained with fresh water, soap dispenser, improved power saving hand dryer , internal grey water tank with a safe disposal outlet whenever necessary, water level sensors, also different sensors and display were integrated to customize the use of the stations since the outbreak of covid_19,to help people exercising basic tests and the collected data were automatically sent, with station's Realtime locations and time stamp to their developed monitoring dashboard so that Ministry of health in Rwanda could be able to locate regions with red signs and send Doctors to confirm the real situation. We've used IOT, develop electronic system ,software development for the dashboard, Water reclamation to treat water in the grey tank and re purpose them for irrigation purpose, with help of CAD design and welding we were able to design a second version that is portable and ready to be deployed in harsh environments , we have also recycled some electronic components ,to develop new sub systems of the station.
Our Portable handwashing stations are now able to use their internal power generators and to run on renewable energy systems ( environmental friendly)
As mentioned in the video , Over 829 000 people in low- and middle-income countries die as a result of inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene , after recognizing the challenge we came up with a solution we have started to scale our solution in private and public places , both in the urban and rural areas here in Rwanda .
Over 25000, people have been served by our stations , but that's not a measure of success for us , we are still improving the production capacity so that we can reach out to people , in rural areas , vulnerable families , refugee camps , Specifically we have started finding partners so that we will be able to donate some stations to vulnerable families that are not able to afford the price .
For other clients who are able to afford the stations we are putting efforts in reducing costs, providing trainings ,advocacy , enhancing innovations to adapt to the changes and improve customer experience.
We have now started a process of working with ministry of Health in Rwanda in accordance to their five years strategic plan to serve more of our people ,
However we are are willing to go an extra mile by enhancing technology and production capacity, to deploy our stations in East and North Africa to save one more life.
From the researchers to the engineers and developers , we are dedicated to delivering best results to our community through our common and aligned goals, open communication, and community experience , after design and pilot of first version of the station , we established feedback loop and as the result the community in some rural areas ,said that they were not able to use the station for long hours ,because the lack of battery charging stations .
it was really a challenging situation but after conducting a field survey we came up with solution by developing second version with internal generator.
we are now happy to talk to the community members during community activities , like "UMUGANDA" and "AKAGOROBA K'ABABYEYI" we are now working in hands with Advocates , to connect with different communities and develop solutions that address their challenges .
- Improve accessibility and quality of health services for underserved groups in fragile contexts around the world (such as refugees and other displaced people, women and children, older adults, LGBTQ+ individuals, etc.)
- Rwanda
- Scale: A sustainable enterprise working in several communities or countries that is focused on increased efficiency
We have been able to scale our solution and we are currently serving above 25000 people. but we are willing to go an extra mile and save more lives , in underserved communities , refugee camps, rural areas and vulnerable families
The main challenge we are facing is the visibility of the solution , we need people to know there are problem solvers around the world who are ready to offer their contribution , we also need to have a chance of Networking with other solvers to share the ideas and visions of delivering solutions to the most pressing challenges of mother earth , we are also looking forward to meeting people with different expertise who will be able to help us grow enhance technology and improve production capacity to serve more .
- Business Model (e.g. product-market fit, strategy & development)
- Financial (e.g. accounting practices, pitching to investors)
- Public Relations (e.g. branding/marketing strategy, social and global media)
- Technology (e.g. software or hardware, web development/design)
Our team convert knowledge and ideas into practical innovative solutions that benefit our people and bettering our world . our stations are user friendly ,and inclusive , even people with disability and those who didn't have a chance to attend schools can use them through guidance and interactions between the machine and user .
Through IOT integration it easy to monitor the stations location for maintenance when in needed, and through integration of AI the stations are customizable to perform additional tasks .
They They can be deployed in areas with no ready access to electric infrastructure, with the help of its internal generator .
Through the development journey we used green technology by Recycling some electric and electronics components to develop some parts of the machine .
They are environmental friendly
Our team is working days and Nights to increase the number of stations produced to save more lives in Africa, and improve access to sanitation in Africa .
This year we have stared a project of improving the production facility and capacity where by the end of 2023 we will be able to double the number of machines produced and deployed annually.
Five years ahead we are looking forward to opening a new facilities and creating partnership in Uganda , Kenya and Ethiopia.
- 3. Good Health and Well-being
- 6. Clean Water and Sanitation
- 9. Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
- 13. Climate Action
- 17. Partnerships for the Goals
We'll be able to measure our progress by :
Establishing a medium manufacturing industry that will be producing 5000 station /year by 2025
deploying our solutions at least in 5 African countries by 2028
Creating 3 new jobs relating with sanitation and e-waste recycling solutions every year
Our solution piloting proved that it is possible to reduce death related to Hygiene and sanitations , and we have developed the stations, to be portable , user friendly and affordable , with Government , private and International organization partnership we will be able , deploy many stations ,and monitor the progress , with reference to strategic plan and total involvement to deliver best experience to our people
Our solution is powered by different technologies including but not limited Internet of Things , software development , manufacturing technology, recycling technology and we are working on integrating Artificial intelligence, to enhance customization capabilities to serve different purposes.
- A new application of an existing technology
- Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning
- Biotechnology / Bioengineering
- Internet of Things

All our projects are inclusion centered and we embrace difference because diversity brings the opportunity to create a great impact in people lives starting with team mates ,. when they feel valued it motivates everyone to excel and deliver best results , so when recruiting new staffs most of categories are represented including but not limited to , people with disabilities (we have established possibility campaign), teen mothers, fellow youth, innovative individuals, and people who did not stand a chance to pursue the highest education, because they have proved that they can make a great impact , and together we make a great team to address challenges beyond the limits
We Develop and manufacture smart mobile handwashing stations , we deploy them for leasing in ceremonies , camping sites and events . they vary in size depending on the number of users but fro 20$ our clients are able to lease stations and use them a whole day , and 70$ for buying one for commercial or residential use. we offer free derivery and after services with 2 years warranty .
We are looking for interested partners who are wiling to join efforts to produces stations that will be able to be deployed in refugee camps and underserved communities.
- Individual consumers or stakeholders (B2C)
we are raising money to support this solution from an other project of Re-using E-waste to make new machines that helps our community in daily lives and make money for us. we are looking for investors who are interested in our solution to invest in .MIT solve will also be great chance to get the exposure of our solution and letting the world know the benefits this solution which will also help to engage people and attract customers.
We have raised some money from Leasing and sales of stations , other amount raised from the innovation awards received from UNDP in partnership with Government of Rwanda through TVET youth challenge competition
we have also won the first province level prize in Youth connekt enterpreneurship award .
