- For the past 5-6 years, we have been receiving pupils from other private schools, who were said to have weak performance, but our teachers have been integrating a teaching guidance with motivation to pupils, the case which lifted their performances from deep learning by accepting the counselling, being close to them, and maintain the pupils: teacher ratio, which has been about 1:30.
If we successfully become selected to be Project Host, under your collaboration and experience sharing, we are certainly that, we will be able to make it a reality as we have already have the education delivering infrastructures like the classrooms, administration building, hostels, school buses, and other important educational facilities.
Teaching with integrated motivational guidance to enhance deep learning of pre and primary pupils.
The Tanzania pre and primary education has recorded significance progress from 2015 to 2022. The number of pupils in pre education increased from 1,066,823 in year 2015 to 1,543,843 in year 2022 an increase of about 44 percent; and the number of pupils in primary education increased from 8,298,282 in year 2015 to 11,420,973 in year 2022, equivalent to 37 percent.
Despite these enrolment achievements, there are report that nearly 30 percent of the pupils will drop the school from among other reasons, lack of interest with the education is the one. Other factors are such as the economic status of the family, long distances from home to the school, cultural reasons. Others are the challenge of teacher: pupils ratio instead of 1:45, the situation is 1:70, book: pupils ratio, instead of 1:1, it is 1:2, lack of enough classrooms, teaching materials, laboratories, libraries, and meeting halls.
Reports further indicate that those pupils who will succeed to complete the primary education more than 30 percent would fail to read, write or do simple numeracy. The factors that contributed to literacy problem were pupils’ late enrolment in standard one, shortages of teaching and learning resources, and parents’ level of education, inadequate literacy teachers and teachers with poor literacy teaching skills.
Therefore, this solution seek to find how teaching integrated with motivational guidance will enhance deep learning of pre and primary pupils to reduce the percent of pupils who complete primary education without the basic ability of reading, writing and performing simple arithmetic.
This solution works when the following will be followed and maintained :-
- Assess factors related to peers, classrooms, schools, homes, and communities when enrolling the pupil.
- Map positive and negative results of each factor to the educational career development of the pupil.
- Identify his/her interests, potentials and weaknesses to match with the positive and negative results of the factors.
- Select and apply the relevant integrated motivational teaching method.
- Pre-primary age children (ages 2-5)
- Primary school children (ages 5-12)
Not selected "other".
- Level 1: You can describe what you do and why it matters, logically, coherently and convincingly.
The School was established in 2016. Since then, a number of efforts were done to make sure that it captures the expectations of the community and the government.
All of the research methods the school administration has used in one way or another to make it properly working.
In 2021, a formative research was done to collect done explicitly for the preparation of the School's Strategic Plan; which came-up with proposals to enhance seven (7) areas for the school to improve its objectives.
Taking note of the pupils the school received from other schools with a reason that they were below the set out class performance, it was revealed that, they needed a bit an integrated approach to guide them in learning, including to understand their family related challenges. Through this understanding, the teachers using enough time, demonstrated compassion, love, and dedication to help them the approach which became fruitful.
The solution informed as it is working when the final examination results were release, when we could find the pupils passed with distinctions, quit differently from when they were received.
It is now the right time to engage in a LEAP project with the following reasons:-
- The school has prepared a strategic plan, among other areas of focus, academic improvement if given the first priority, the priority we see can be properly implemented by taking the experience from MIT Solve experts.
- The school has been receiving pupils from other schools, who are seemed to be weak or slow learners, and efforts and good teaching practices, despite having limited resources, have contributed significantly to their academic achievements.
- The school has the ambition to collaborate with other partners who can support achievement of the education and academic objectives, the collaboration we are glad to form with such MIT Solve.
- How can a teacher apply an integrated motivational guidance teaching approach in pre and primary education?
- What can be important factors to contribute to the deep learning of the pupils in pre and primary education?
- What strategies to be used to reduce pupils' drop out and inabilities to read, write or do simple arithmetic in primary education?
- Formative research (e.g. usability studies; feasibility studies; case studies; user interviews; implementation studies; pre-post or multi-measure research; correlational studies)
We are certain that, the 12-week LEAP Project sprint is going to be a unique interactive session between the School's Team Members and experts from MIT Solve, through this interaction our desired outputs will involve are:-
- Proposed number of pedagogical strategies for integrated motivational guidance teaching approach in pre and primary education.
- Identified number of important factors contributing to the deep learning of the pupils in pre and primary education.
- List of proposed strategies to be used to reduce pupils' drop out and inabilities to read, write or do simple arithmetic in primary education.
Hyperlink Schools of Tanzania will put the above outputs into actions by:-
- Incorporate all the findings and recommendations into the Third (3rd) School's Strategic Plan (July 2024), as these findings shall form important inputs of the plan.
- Orient the school's teaching and none teaching staff on the outputs and actions the school is taking for the best performance.
- Share the experience to government authorities for further scale-up and mainstreaming into policies and other regulations.
Short term outcomes are:-
- Formed partnership between the school and MIT Solve.
- Teaching and none teaching staff oriented on the solution and ready to apply in teaching and school management.
Long term outcomes are:
- Long term application of an integrated motivational guidance teaching method.
- Raised school performance in terms of reduced pupils drop out and inability to read, write and do arithmetic.
