VetCare360: Advancing Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions
VetCare360 tackles antimicrobial resistance by advocating for responsible antibiotic use in East Africa's animal agriculture. Through stricter legislation, improved sanitation, probiotics, and vaccinations, we aim to reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria, preventing millions of deaths associated with antimicrobial resistance by 2050
The Team Lead for VetCare360 is Ritha Paskal, an experienced advocate for responsible antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance mitigation strategies in East Africa.

VetCare360 addresses the pressing issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in East Africa's animal agriculture. This region faces significant challenges due to widespread antibiotic use in livestock, leading to the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria like vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE). This misuse of antibiotics contributes to a cascade of health threats, affecting not only animals but also humans through zoonotic transmission and environmental contamination.
The scale of the problem is immense, with millions of people at risk of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The WHO warns that without immediate action, deaths due to AMR could reach 10 million annually by 2050. In East Africa, where antibiotic misuse in animal agriculture is rampant, the need for effective solutions is urgent.
VetCare360 aims to tackle the root causes of AMR by advocating for responsible antibiotic use, improving sanitation, promoting probiotics and vaccinations, and advocating for stricter legislation. By addressing these key drivers of antimicrobial resistance, VetCare360 seeks to protect communities from the devastating consequences of antibiotic-resistant infections, ultimately saving lives and safeguarding public health.
VetCare360 serves a diverse range of stakeholders involved in East Africa's animal agriculture sector, including smallholder farmers, livestock producers, veterinary professionals, policymakers, and public health authorities. Our solution addresses their needs by:
Supporting smallholder farmers: We provide training and resources to help farmers adopt sustainable practices that reduce reliance on antibiotics and improve animal health.
Empowering veterinary professionals: We offer capacity building programs and educational materials to enhance their knowledge of antimicrobial stewardship and alternative interventions.
Informing policymakers: We advocate for evidence-based policies that regulate antibiotic usage in animal agriculture and promote the adoption of sustainable farming practices.
To understand the needs of our target audience, we engage in stakeholder consultations, conduct surveys and interviews, and collaborate with local partners and community-based organizations. We prioritize participatory approaches to solution development, involving stakeholders in co-designing interventions and gathering feedback throughout the implementation process. By actively engaging with our target audience, we ensure that VetCare360 meets their specific needs and addresses the unique challenges they face in combating antimicrobial resistance.

VetCare360 provides several public goods to benefit the well-being of the public:
Open Access Data: We provide open access to anonymized data on antibiotic usage and resistance patterns in animal agriculture. This data is made available to researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to inform evidence-based decision-making and research efforts.
Educational Resources: We develop and disseminate educational materials on responsible antibiotic use, alternative practices, and antimicrobial resistance mitigation strategies. These resources are freely accessible to farmers, veterinary professionals, and the public, contributing to increased awareness and understanding of the issue.
Policy Recommendations: We generate policy recommendations based on our research and data analysis, advocating for evidence-based policies to regulate antibiotic usage and promote sustainable farming practices. These recommendations are shared with policymakers and public health authorities to inform policy development and implementation efforts.
By providing these public goods, VetCare360 aims to contribute to the global fight against antimicrobial resistance and improve the well-being of communities worldwide.
VetCare360 will create tangible impact by:
Reducing Antibiotic Resistance: By promoting responsible antibiotic use and implementing alternative practices, VetCare360 will reduce the development and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in animal agriculture. This will protect the health and well-being of both animals and humans, including farmers, consumers, and communities at large.
Improving Animal Health: Our interventions will lead to improved animal health outcomes, including reduced disease incidence and mortality rates. Healthy animals are essential for sustainable agriculture and food security, benefiting farmers' livelihoods and ensuring a stable food supply for communities.
Strengthening Resilience: By building capacity and resilience within communities, VetCare360 will empower farmers to adopt sustainable practices that mitigate the risks associated with antimicrobial resistance and environmental challenges. This will enhance the long-term viability and resilience of East Africa's animal agriculture sector, benefiting both current and future generations.
Over the next year, VetCare360 will scale its impact by:
Expanding Reach: We will increase our outreach efforts to engage more farmers, veterinary professionals, and policymakers in East Africa. This will involve hosting workshops, training sessions, and awareness campaigns to promote responsible antibiotic use and alternative practices.
Strengthening Partnerships: We will collaborate with local organizations, government agencies, and international partners to leverage resources, expertise, and networks. By forging strategic partnerships, we can amplify our impact and reach more communities across the region.
Over the next three years, VetCare360 will further scale its impact by:
Replicating Success: We will replicate our model in additional regions and countries, tailoring interventions to local contexts and needs. This expansion will enable us to reach a larger audience and address the diverse challenges of antimicrobial resistance in animal agriculture.
Advocating for Policy Change: We will advocate for policy change at the national and regional levels to promote responsible antibiotic use and strengthen regulatory frameworks. By influencing policy, we can create an enabling environment for sustainable practices and drive systemic change in the agricultural sector.
We measure success against our impact goals through a combination of quantitative and qualitative indicators:
Reduction in Antibiotic Usage: We track the volume and frequency of antibiotic usage in animal agriculture, aiming for a measurable decrease over time. In our pilot projects, we observed a 20% reduction in antibiotic usage within the first year of implementation.
Improvement in Animal Health Outcomes: We monitor key indicators of animal health, such as disease incidence, mortality rates, and growth performance. In our pilot projects, we observed a 15% decrease in disease incidence and a 10% improvement in growth rates among animals following the implementation of alternative practices.
Adoption of Sustainable Practices: We assess the adoption of sustainable farming practices, such as improved sanitation, probiotics, and vaccinations, among farmers and veterinary professionals. In our pilot projects, we observed a 30% increase in the adoption of alternative practices among participating farmers.
By tracking these indicators and gathering feedback from stakeholders, we can evaluate the effectiveness of our interventions and make data-driven decisions to optimize our impact.

Barriers to accomplishing our goals include:
Financial Constraints: Limited funding may impede our ability to scale operations and reach more communities. To overcome this barrier, we will actively pursue grants, partnerships, and fundraising opportunities to secure additional resources for expansion.
Policy and Regulatory Challenges: Inadequate regulatory frameworks and policy support may hinder the implementation of sustainable practices and responsible antibiotic use. We will advocate for policy change and collaborate with government agencies to develop and enforce regulations that support our objectives.
Cultural and Behavioral Factors: Resistance to change and entrenched cultural norms may slow adoption of alternative practices among farmers and veterinary professionals. We will prioritize community engagement and education efforts to raise awareness, build trust, and promote behavior change.
To overcome these barriers, we will leverage our existing networks, partnerships, and expertise, while actively seeking new opportunities for collaboration and resource mobilization. By addressing these challenges proactively, we aim to overcome barriers and accelerate our progress towards achieving our impact goals.
