Sunlight Pump for Irrigation to stop Deforestation by smallholder farmers
- Zambia
- Hybrid of for-profit and nonprofit
The specific problems we are solving is shortage of food as a result of drought caused by climate change and deforestation caused by smallholder farmers for charcoal for sale. The scale of the drought like this year is that half of the country Zambia had severe drought and the President of Zambia has pronounced it as National Challenge because it has affected about half of the population of Zambia. The number of people affected in the country Zambia is 11,000,000. The factors contributing the problem relating to our solution is drought caused by climate change because of deforestation for charcoal for sale by smallholder farmers in the dry season which affects the climate change.
To mitigate and prevent further man-made destruction of the environment, Muchinga General Enterprises Limited is solving by changing the agricultural production cycle of women smallholder farmers by empowering them with sunlight water pumps for irrigation purposes and providing them with guaranteed market for their cereal, legumes and other crops at the local rural in Mafinga and Serenje Zambia. This is to empower them and save on hard labour and making them to grow and irrigate large position and yield much for sale as an income generating activity unlike cutting of trees for charcoal for sale.
For solar water pump systems to be given as long term loan basis to smallholder farmers, we plan to start with 3000 smallholder farmers cooperatives who could each be able to manage Two hectares for each cooperative under irrigation and grow different crops throughout out the year. We shall purchase the crops from these smallholder farmers at the local rural and sell to bulk buyers and processors. We have operation centres in Mafinga and Serenje Districts in Zambia which require two warehouses for storage of crops at the local rural in Muchinga and Central Province

The smallholder farmers to be paid for commodities purchased from them using mobile phone payment system for security in the rural both to the company as well as smallholder farmers for them to increase saving as well as quick recovery of solar water pump systems loans. Another service is that of ploughing the fields quickly using the tractor for the smallholder farmers to increase size of hectares for growing crops under irrigation. This will increase income at household level as well as food security for smallholder farmers and for them to concentrate on farming as source of income unlike cutting trees for charcoal for sell which affect the climate change.
The target population are smallholder farmers in Zambia who earn income once a year after they sale their harvest and in dry season try to earn income by cutting trees for charcoal for sale which is affecting the climate change. These smallholder farmers are our customers for sunlight water pumps and at the same time are our producers of the crops for our sale. Most of the Smallholder farmers cannot afford to buy the sunlight water pump system for irrigation but by our solution we are making it possible for every smallholder farmer.
Our solution will address their need by our guaranteed market for cereal and legume crops grown by smallholder farmers in rural areas in Mafinga and Serenje Districts Zambia so that they increase the volume of production of cereal and legume crops thereby creating value of agribusiness to discourage deforestation for charcoal for sale while providing guaranteed supply to bulk buyers and processors that meet the quality, type, quantity and at market price.
The company founder Mr. Chaka Ng'ambi understands that the world is becoming more abundant, and this allows to maintain a hopeful and compelling vision for the future for the people, especially smallholder farmers in Mafinga and Serenje in Zambia and having such a positive goal sets him apart so design and deliver the solution to the target population of smallholder farmers in Zambia.
The enterprise team will not fear the future instead it will embrace it and become excited to learn all it can to create the future the team and business desire. The enterprise team will not resent missed opportunities because it understands that the world is of ever-increasing opportunities and shall view competitors as potential future collaborators.
We identified the need for this since since we have been working in Mafinga District Zambia for more than five years now with women and cooperatives and found that women in Mafinga District are hardworking but need sunlight water pumps for irriagtion to become empowered and become resilient to drought caused by climate changes so that they have food security at household level. The communities in Mafinga District like cooperatives were involved and headmen to identify the need of the solution.

- Pilot
We selected this stage because weare yet to acquire the Sunlight water pumps systems from Jain Irrigation Systems Limited to pilot the solution indicated and we have aggregated cereals and legumes from smallholder farmers and sold to World Food Programme to feed school children and people who were affected by severe drought caused by climate change in 2016 in Zimbabwe. The way we have designed our solution is our business model to prosper together with smallholder farmers while conserving the environment.
The specific financial, technical, legal, cultural and market barriers are that we do not have capacity in terms of finance of about USD100000 to purchase sunlight water pumps for irrigation from Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd in India but want to use that technology to solve the challenge of drought caused by climate change. We are applying to solve
to acquire

Our agribusiness model where the smallholder farmers are our customers for solar water pumps for irrigation purposes and at the same time are our producers for cereals and legumes which we buy from them at the local rural in Mafinga and Serenje Districts and sell to bulk buyers and processors is our innovation NOT the sunlight pump for irrigation. The way the agribusiness model is designed is our innovation so that the smallholder farmers will increase the production of cereals, legumes and other crops, mitigate drought effect by irrigation, stop cutting trees for charcoal for sale and concentrate on farming as source of income because of the guaranteed market at the local rural in Mafinga and Serenje District in Zambia. Smallholder farmers will be provided sunlight water pumps for irrigation as loans to repay within one or two years. We are creating guaranteed market for cereal and legume crops grown by smallholder farmers in rural areas in Mafinga and Serenje Districts Zambia so that they increase the volume of production of cereal and legume crops thereby creating value of agribusiness to discourage deforestation for charcoal for sale while providing guaranteed supply to bulk buyers and processors that meet the quality, type, quantity and at market price. Selling solar water pump systems to smallholder farmers and making it affordable even to the poor, sensitizing and training smallholder farmers about improved way to do farming using new innovative methods by installing solar water pumps for irrigation so that they have increased income and food security by growing crops throughout the year as well as overcome the risk of drought and adapt to climate change as well as stop cutting down of trees for charcoal as source of income..For solar water pump systems to be given as long term loan basis to smallholder farmers, we plan to start with 3000 smallholder farmers cooperatives who could each be able to manage Two hectares for each cooperative under irrigation and grow different crops throughout out the year. We shall purchase the crops from these smallholder farmers at the local rural and sell to bulk buyers and processors. We have operation centres in Mafinga and Serenje Districts in Zambia which require two warehouses for storage of crops at the local rural in Muchinga and Central Provinces.
Our solution will create great impact to the poor smallholder farmers to adapt and become resilient to drought caused by climate change and we are making sunlight water pumps for irrigation affordable.
The specific critical barriers or problems we want to solve relate to the water and energy for food that our product/services addresses are: 1.For Water- Climate change is causing dry lands even areas which were wetlands and therefore smallholder farmers in these areas are facing challenges for water for agricultural purposes and for their livestock. 2.Cost of energy to smallholder farmers to do irrigation. 3.Increase in population need for nutritious food.
Our unique agribusiness model is designed to solve the above barriers by prospering together with the rural smallholder farmers by changing their agricultural production cycle using available sunlight solar water pumps for irrigation purpose and providing guaranteed market at the local rural for cereals and legume crops produced by smallholder farmer to encourage them to increase production of these crops to feed the fast-increasing population with nutritious food. Making solar water pump systems affordable to the smallholder farmers by providing long term loans in terms of solar water pumps systems for irrigation purposes.
The demand for Sunlight water pump for irrigation by smallholder farmers used in our innovative agribusiness model in Mafinga and Serenje Districts are derived by unpredictable rain pattern because of drought and climate change. It is also derived to increase food production because of the fast increasing population which needs food. The consistent demand for cereal like maize(corn) is the main staple food for most of the countries in the Southern African countries and for legume like common beans is the source of cheap proteins for most of the rural poor and even in the urban areas. The service of providing loans for solar water pump systems for irrigation purposes is being derived because of the climate change which is causing unpredictable rain patterns for most of the smallholder farmers to cope with in Southern African countries. The value created for solar water system for irrigation purposes to smallholder farmers is that they are able to concentrate on farming as source of income unlike cutting of trees in the dry season for charcoal for sell which affects the climate change. The customers are at both ends, smallholder farmers for solar water pump systems for irrigation and bulk buyers of cereal and legume crops for processing like in milling companies and livestock manufacturers. Financial services we offer link smallholder farmers in the rural by phone to distant banks so that smallholder farmers could make banking services and transactions at the local rural.
Positive environmental impact could be achieved as most smallholder farmers in the rural in Mafinga and Serenje Districts Zambia will concentrate on continuous farming of crop rotation using the solar water pumps for irrigation. The cutting down of trees for charcoal for sell will
be drastically reduced by smallholder farmers. Water reservoirs will be used for water pumped by solar water pumps unlike letting water flow from rivers to lakes. The water saved could be used for irrigation by smallholder farmers.
Negative environmental impact is mitigated by sensitizing smallholder farmers about the importance of preserving our environment so that we do not kill the future generation by using our available resources sustainably.
Interested investors could help with the required funding of USD186000 for the proposed solution to make women resilient to climate change especially in terms of food security by being able to grow crops throughout the year and making it affordable to acquire sunlight water pump for irrigation purposes. This will include the purchasing of tractors to plough the fields instead of using hoes by smallholder farmer women in order to help farmers cope with the increased crop production due to the continuous irrigation farming. We need to register, connect and train more than 12000 smallholder farmers in Mafinga and Serenje Districts Zambia in four months about how to use any mobile phone to make transactions on mobile phone and banking services at the local rural.
The benefits are that investors will help to save work of women and for them to become resilient to effects of climate change like drought if they are empowered with sunlight water pump for irrigation and to feed the fast-increasing population with real nutritious food of common beans, and also help preserve the environment
