Kaimore is addressing the specific problem of generational and cyclical poverty affecting transition-aged foster/at-risk youth and single mothers/women affected by domestic abuse. These vulnerable populations face significant hurdles in accessing education, training, and support due to compounding systemic barriers such as socioeconomic disparities. In the U.S. alone, there are approximately 424,000 children in foster care, and about 13.6 million single parents, the majority being single mothers, grappling with these challenges. Globally, an estimated 1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, often by an intimate partner.
One of the severe consequences of poverty and cyclical poverty is homelessness. Homelessness is often a result of financial instability, lack of affordable housing, and limited access to support services, which further exacerbate the challenges faced by transition-aged foster/at-risk youth and single mothers/women affected by domestic abuse. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, approximately 17 out of every 10,000 people in the U.S. experienced homelessness on a single night in 2020. Furthermore, families with children are particularly vulnerable, accounting for 36% of the homeless population in the U.S.
Generational and cyclical poverty perpetuates the cycle of poverty by limiting access to education and resources, hindering the ability to afford basic necessities and achieve long-term economic security. In the U.S., poverty disproportionately affects certain demographic groups, including racial and ethnic minorities, single-parent households, and individuals with lower levels of education. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the poverty rate in 2020 was highest for Black and Hispanic individuals, single mothers, and those with less than a high school diploma. Globally, poverty affects millions of people, with the World Bank estimating that nearly 10% of the world's population lives on less than $1.90 per day.
Several factors contribute to these challenges, including:
- Socioeconomic Disparities: Limited access to quality education and job opportunities due to socioeconomic factors.
- Lack of Financial Literacy: Many do not have the necessary financial knowledge and skills to manage money effectively.
- Lack of Career Development Opportunities: Limited access to career development resources and support.
- Language and Communication Barriers: The need for multilingual support to cater to diverse communities.
- Inefficiencies in Manual Case Management: Challenges in managing and scaling support services efficiently.
To address these challenges, Kaimore provides essential financial literacy and career development training that go hand in hand. Through a holistic approach, Kaimore provides participants with confidence, responsibility, critical thinking skills, and real-world experience. Entrepreneurship training is also offered, providing mentorship and support for youth to explore business ideas, develop plans, and launch ventures. Furthermore, Kaimore offers one-on-one mentorship and financial assistance for educational and vocational opportunities to empower individuals to break the cycle of poverty and achieve economic stability.
Kaimore's program offers a transformative journey towards financial security, stable living, and career advancement for transition-aged foster/at-risk youth and single mothers/women affected by domestic abuse. The yearlong program reaches over 450+ at-risk women and youth/TAY annually.
The program kicks off with a Workforce Development phase from July to September, where participants engage in paid internships in various career tracks such as food, hospitality, IT, and warehousing/logistics. Alongside this, they participate in masterclasses covering resume building, interviewing, job search strategies, and networking, and receive assistance in connecting with future employers. Following this, the Path to Homeownership phase in September and October helps participants understand the homebuying process and prepare for loan qualifications, providing them with access to affordable/ permanent housing programs in preparation to depart transitional housing.
The Year-end Reflection and New Year Goals phase in November and December allows participants to conclude the year with assessments and celebrate their achievements. They also proactively create SMART goals and vision boards for the new year. From January to April, the program offers Free Tax Services, including tax preparation with IRS-certified tax preparers to maximize tax deductions and credits, debt consolidation and credit repair services, and assistance with Medicare/medical sign-ups for the uninsured. Finally, the Financial Education and Training phase in April and May focuses on equipping participants with foundational financial knowledge and helping them develop a one-year budget.
In addition to the structured curriculum, the program offers year-round soft skills masterclasses covering resume building, interviewing skills, communication, time management, computer literacy, and professionalism. It also includes an Entrepreneurship Cohort, providing an educational course on starting a business, including panel discussions and insights into day-to-day operations.
Kaimore's technology plays a crucial role in addressing two significant challenges: language and communication barriers and inefficiencies in manual case management.
One of the major hurdles faced by at-risk communities is the language and communication barrier, which can impede their access to essential services and support. Kaimore's AI-powered platform is equipped with multilingual support capabilities to cater to diverse communities, ensuring that language is not a barrier to receiving the help and resources they need. The AI algorithms can translate and adapt content in real-time, providing personalized recommendations, feedback, and support in multiple languages. This ensures that the program is accessible and inclusive, breaking down language barriers and enabling individuals from diverse backgrounds to engage effectively with the program and achieve their goals.
Managing and scaling support services efficiently can be challenging due to the manual nature of case management, which can result in delays, errors, and inconsistencies in service delivery. Kaimore's platform automates repetitive client inquiries and streamlines the case management process, eliminating inefficiencies and enabling more effective and scalable service delivery. The ML algorithms analyze individual data and behavior to deliver personalized recommendations and support, allowing case managers to focus on providing personalized guidance and mentorship to individuals rather than administrative tasks. This automation and optimization of case management processes can enable Kaimore to scale its impact and reach thousands of individuals more efficiently.
Kaimore's target population consists of transition-aged foster/at-risk youth and single mothers/women affected by domestic abuse, who face significant barriers in accessing education, training, and support due to compounding systemic challenges such as socioeconomic disparities.
Transition-aged foster/at-risk youth and single mothers/women affected by domestic abuse face significant hurdles in accessing education, training, and support due to compounding systemic barriers like socioeconomic disparities. In the U.S. alone, there are approximately 424,000 children in foster care, and about 13.6 million single parents, the majority being single mothers, grappling with these challenges. Globally, an estimated 1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. These barriers result in limited job opportunities and financial instability, perpetuating the cycle of poverty and hindering their capacity to afford basic necessities and achieve long-term economic security.
The scale of the problem is substantial, affecting millions of individuals both locally and globally. In the U.S., foster youth face a challenging transition to adulthood, with only about half graduating from high school, and only about 3-6% earning a college degree by age 26. Single mothers/women affected by domestic abuse often face financial hardships and barriers to accessing education and stable employment, contributing to their vulnerability and economic instability. Globally, an estimated 140 million children are orphaned or abandoned, many of whom face significant challenges in accessing education and employment opportunities as they transition to adulthood. Furthermore, domestic abuse affects millions of women worldwide, limiting their ability to access education and economic opportunities.
These vulnerable populations are currently underserved due to a lack of tailored, comprehensive support and resources to address their unique needs and circumstances. Traditional support systems often fall short in providing effective, personalized assistance and fail to equip individuals with the necessary skills and resources to break the cycle of poverty and achieve economic stability. Or, many government programs are inefficient and have bottlenecks due to staffing and staff capacity. Furthermore, language and communication barriers and inefficiencies in manual case management further exacerbate these challenges, limiting access to essential services and support.
The Kaimore program offers a transformative journey towards financial security, stable living, and career advancement, including paid internships, a pathway to homeownership, entrepreneurship opportunities, and ongoing community support. The program is structured into several key components aimed at comprehensive personal and professional development, including workforce development, homeownership preparation, year-end reflection and goal setting, free tax services, and financial education and training. In addition to the structured curriculum, the program offers year-round soft skills masterclasses, an entrepreneurship cohort, a business accelerator, and community support and building activities to foster a sense of community and peer support. The program is designed to transition people into permanent and housing and create sustainable solutions to poverty and homelessness.
Through this comprehensive and personalized approach, Kaimore empowers individuals to overcome systemic barriers, achieve economic stability, and build a brighter future for themselves and their families, directly and meaningfully improving the lives of transition-aged foster/at-risk youth and single mothers/women affected by domestic abuse.
Our team, led by Executive Director Joyce Lam, is uniquely positioned to design and deliver the Kaimore solution to our target population of transition-aged foster/at-risk youth and single mothers/women affected by domestic abuse. Joyce has been on the ground serving the homeless community for 8 years and has firsthand experience identifying key pain points that often lead to homelessness, as well as understanding the demographics that are particularly vulnerable. She has leveraged this experience to design Kaimore's programs, choosing to focus on homeless and poverty prevention, empowering the next generation by targeting vulnerable mothers, youth, and young adults to support.
Joyce and our team bring a wealth of lived experience and close proximity to the experiences of being low-income, having overcome its challenges through education and career development. This personal connection to the communities we serve enables us to understand their unique needs, challenges, and aspirations, and to design a solution that is tailored to address these specific issues effectively.
The design and implementation of the Kaimore solution are meaningfully guided by the communities' input, ideas, and agendas. We actively engage with the target population through focus groups, surveys, and one-on-one consultations to gather feedback and insights, ensuring that the program is responsive to their needs and aspirations. This participatory approach ensures that the solution is grounded in the lived experiences and perspectives of the communities we serve, making it more relevant, effective, and impactful.
Our team is committed to empowering individuals to break the cycle of poverty, achieve economic stability, and build a brighter future for themselves and their families. We are passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable populations, and our close proximity and deep connection to these communities enable us to build trust, foster relationships, and provide the personalized support and resources needed to help individuals overcome systemic barriers and achieve holistic personal and professional development.

Our continued growth and impact are a testament to the effectiveness of our programs and the meaningful difference we are making in the lives of transition-aged foster/at-risk youth and single mothers/women affected by domestic abuse. We are applying to Solve because we believe in the power of collaboration and the potential to leverage the Solve network to overcome specific challenges that are hindering our growth and scalability. Since our founding in 2018, Kaimore has experienced exponential growth, serving over 350 individuals in 2022 and 850 in 2023. However, we are currently facing several financial, technical, legal, and market barriers that we hope Solve can help us overcome to expand our reach and impact.
One of our primary financial challenges is the lack of unrestricted funding. A majority of our contracts are reimbursement-based, requiring us to front the overall program cost before receiving reimbursement from the government. This approach leaves us with no reserves in our bank and limits our financial flexibility. We are seeking support to secure unrestricted funding to increase our financial security and operational flexibility, enabling us to meet the growing demand for our services effectively.
In addition to financial challenges, we aim to enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of our AI-powered Career Coach platform to provide more personalized and efficient support to our clients. We would appreciate technical guidance and expertise to optimize our AI-based platform, leveraging the latest advancements in AI and machine learning to improve the platform's performance and impact.
As we look to grow our organization and team and eventually scale our program, we also need legal guidance to navigate complex regulatory and compliance issues. We are seeking legal support and expertise to ensure that we are compliant with all relevant laws and regulations and to provide guidance on organizational and operational matters as we continue to grow and scale our impact.
Furthermore, the demand for our services is much larger than what we can currently offer, and it is above our capacity. We would like to leverage Solve's network to connect with partners who can provide support and guidance on organizational development, team expansion, and program scalability to meet the growing demand and provide the right solutions effectively.
By partnering with Solve, we hope to connect with like-minded organizations, experts, and partners who can provide the necessary support and resources to help us overcome these barriers and continue to expand our reach and impact. We are committed to empowering transition-aged foster/at-risk youth and single mothers/women affected by domestic abuse to break the cycle of poverty, achieve economic stability, and build a brighter future for themselves and their families, and we believe that with Solve's support, we can make an even greater difference in the lives of the individuals we serve and create a positive and lasting impact on our community.

We developed an AI Career Coach for our website by leveraging the capabilities of the OpenAI API. The integration involved linking the native chat feature provided by the Wix platform with the OpenAI API. Essentially, when a user interacts with the chat interface on the website, the backend infrastructure forwards their messages to the OpenAI API for processing. Subsequently, the API generates a response based on the input, which is then seamlessly relayed back to the user through the chat interface, providing real-time engagement and assistance.
Users are prompted to ask questions pertaining to information encapsulated within our organizational framework, such as inquiries regarding our four pillars. For example, users might inquire about tax deadlines or seek clarification on financial instruments like IRAs.
Moreover, the system is equipped with tailored instructions to address inquiries specific to Kaimore, covering comprehensive details about our programs, booking procedures, and key team members available for contact. This ensures that the chatbot possesses an extensive repository of organizational knowledge, facilitating informed interactions with users and providing real-time engagement and assistance.
Additionally, we have an in house ML Algorithm that analyzes and provides suggestions based off of client data to assist case managers in providing individualized support.
It can automates repetitive client inquiries, provides multilingual support, and eliminates inefficiencies in manual case management, enabling more effective and scalable service delivery. By leveraging technology to enhance accessibility, inclusivity, and efficiency, we can reach more at-risk youth and single mothers/women affected by domestic abuse and provide the support and resources they need to break the cycle of poverty and achieve economic stability.
