MENTEE - World Changing Connections

- Nonprofit
MENTEE is a unique mentorship program that addresses significant global problems using an approach that empowers, encourages equality, and is holistic. Traditional mentorship models for disadvantaged individuals are hierarchical, limiting, and lack the necessary human supports. MENTEE strives to overcome the constraints and inequity of traditional mentorship and our global systems through:
Global Inclusive Mentorship: Traditional mentorship programs suffer from limited accessibility for those who are disadvantaged, primarily due to geographical constraints or exclusive networks. They cannot help people anywhere in the world and instead focus on one area, excluding the global community. For organizations that do include mentorship beyond one border, they are often focused on a select, elite group of recipients and often require very specific educational experiences or skill sets.
Traditional Matching V. Empowerment: A critical challenge of the traditional mentorship approach is their reinforcement of social hierarchies and lack of reinforcement of the mentee’s abilities. By using matching and accepting that an algorithm knows better than a mentee a mentorship program tells the mentee they lack the skills to find support on their own and the cognitive abilities to determine who could best support their needs. The matching process places one knowing person together with one needing person and automatically reinforces a social hierarchy in role, relationship, and outcome.
Diversity and Inclusion: Traditional mentorship networks are often homogenous, and lacking diversity. The team involved in the building of the organization or program is usually homogenous and their mentor pool lacks the rich attributes or their mentees. Additionally, without proper training in diversity and inclusion, there is a risk, at best, of subtle assumptions made on the part of the mentors throughout the mentorship experience.
Breadth and Depth: Other mentorship programs are limited in scope and focus exclusively on one area of support.
Community Building: Traditional mentorship at best gives opportunities for their mentors to meet with each other, and at worst foster no sense of larger community for the growth of all their members. With such challenges, mentors and mentees feel a lack of warmth and natural comfort and trust in the program.
Support & Opportunities: When offering mentorship, organizations and programs are limited with their capacity to offer support and instead produce 6 month, one year, summer programs, limiting the community growth and the support of the mentee. What happens to the mentee when the program is done? How many mentorship programs have alumni but nothing to offer them? Sadly, many mentees are left without support because of limited capacity or narrow missions.
Unfortunately, traditional mentorship models and our global systems pose by offering a globally inclusive approach through a scalable, accessible, and technology-driven platform and supportive program that prioritizes the mentee and empowers them for life. Through its globally innovative approach, MENTEE seeks to change our global access structures by reimagining mentorship, building a powerful NGO and partner ecosystem, and empowering individuals from all backgrounds to gain access to learning, support and opportunities for a better, healthier life.
MENTEE has revolutionized traditional mentorship models by addressing significant global challenges through an approach that empowers, encourages equality, and embraces holistic growth. There where traditional mentorship systems often perpetuate hierarchies and exclude marginalized individuals, MENTEE stands out as a platform, program, and community of inclusivity and empowerment. MENTEE has reimagined mentorship by providing:
Global Inclusive Mentorship: Traditional mentorship programs suffer from limited accessibility for the disadvantaged, primarily due to geographical constraints or exclusive networks. MENTEE breaks down barriers offering a digital platform accessible globally, translated into five languages, with global mentors collectively speaking 33 languages with various specializations, within a supportive community. Managing socio-economic challenges, MENTEE works to ensure individuals, regardless of location or social position, receive training, guidance, support, and opportunities. Additionally, time zone challenges can reinforce hierarchy. Our global south friends tend to sacrifice their own sleep for Western schedules. MENTEE encourages synchronous and asynchronous sessions to accommodate our mentees.
Traditional Matching V. Empowerment: A critical challenge of the traditional mentorship approach is their reinforcement of social hierarchies and lack of reinforcement of the mentee’s abilities. MENTEE turns mentorship upside down by placing global mentor specialists on a platform where our trained mentees choose their own “Circles of Mentorship” to support their changing needs.
Diversity and Inclusion: Traditional mentorship networks are often homogenous, lacking diversity of gender, race, ethnicity, and background. MENTEE recognizes the importance of a rich community of mentors and actively promotes a culture of diversity and a global mindset. By connecting individuals from various backgrounds and demographics, the platform fosters trust-building between cultures and ensures a variety of perspectives and experiences for all participants.
Breadth and Depth: Our global mentors are specialists in academic subjects, professional development, language learning, and personal development.
Community Building: Fostering an ecosystem of growth, opportunity, and support, MENTEE also offers a Peer-to-Peer Gallery where mentees can connect with other mentees from around the world. Mentees are offered their own profile and can reach out to build their network, create projects, share best practices, or socialize. They can share events and join each other in conversations. MENTEE also fosters community through group sessions which further encourage community building among our global mentors and mentees.
Support & Opportunities For Life: MENTEE supports all of their mentees for life. Each mentee comes to us from partner NGOs and is offered the ability to engage with any of our global mentors, receive monthly Mind & Body Healing sessions, group Professional Development, and various other opportunities, including university certifications, through our global partners.
MENTEE has transformed the traditional mentorship model by offering a globally inclusive approach through a scalable, accessible, and technology-driven platform and supportive program that prioritizes the mentee and empowers them for life. Through its globally innovative approach, MENTEE seeks to change our global access structures by reimagining mentorship, building a powerful NGO and partner ecosystem, and empowering diverse individuals to gain access to learning, support, and opportunities for a better, healthier life.
MENTEE serves a diverse range of disadvantaged individuals across different demographics, including professionals and students, and anyone seeking guidance and support in their personal and professional development journey.
For mentors, MENTEE provides an opportunity to give back to their communities and make a meaningful impact by sharing their knowledge, skills, and experiences with others. Many experienced professionals and industry leaders are eager to mentor the next generation but may struggle to find suitable mentees or lack a convenient platform to connect with them. MENTEE addresses this gap by offering a streamlined and efficient way for mentors to find mentees who can benefit from their expertise. By serving as mentors, individuals can derive a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction from contributing to the growth and development of others, while also honing their leadership and coaching skills.
For mentees, MENTEE offers access to valuable resources, guidance, and support that can accelerate their personal and professional growth. Many aspiring professionals, students, and entrepreneurs face challenges in navigating their career paths, identifying opportunities for growth, and accessing mentorship networks. MENTEE addresses these challenges by providing a centralized platform where mentees can connect with mentors who can offer insights, advice, and support tailored to their specific needs and goals. By leveraging the expertise and experiences of mentors, mentees can gain valuable insights, expand their networks, and overcome obstacles on their journey to success.
The target population for MENTEE includes individuals who may be underserved or overlooked by traditional mentorship models. This includes students from underrepresented backgrounds, early-career professionals lacking access to professional networks, entrepreneurs seeking guidance in launching and scaling their ventures, and individuals in remote or rural areas with limited opportunities for mentorship. By providing an inclusive and accessible platform, MENTEE aims to democratize access to mentorship and empower individuals from all walks of life to achieve their full potential.
MENTEE and its team are uniquely positioned to deliver solutions for MIT Solve grants due to our deep understanding and proximity to the communities we aim to serve. MENTEE’s team is led by individuals who have grown up and lived within these communities and possesses an intimate knowledge of the present challenges. Our representation spans across diverse backgrounds, ensuring that our approach is inclusive and considers the varied perspectives and needs of the target population.
MENTEE’s team brings extensive experience and insight gained from personal involvement and engagement within the community. Having faced similar challenges firsthand, we possess a genuine empathy and understanding of the struggles individuals encounter daily. This proximity allows for a more authentic and empathetic approach to solution design, ensuring that the solutions are not only effective but also culturally sensitive and relevant.
Moreover, our mentors are selected based on their direct ties and experiences within the target communities. Whether through personal connections, professional networks, or grassroots involvement, each member brings a unique perspective that enriches the design and implementation process. This diversity ensures that our solutions are holistic and address the diversified needs of the community.
Central to our approach is the meaningful engagement of the community throughout the entire process. We prioritize listening to the voices of community members, actively seeking their input, ideas, and feedback. Through focus groups, surveys, community meetings, and one-on-one interactions, we ensure that the solutions we design are driven by the actual needs and aspirations of the people we serve.
Furthermore, our team operates under a collaborative model, where community members are not just passive recipients of aid but active participants in the solution-building process. By empowering community members to co-create solutions alongside us, we foster a sense of ownership and agency, ensuring the sustainability and long-term success of our initiatives.
Our design and implementation strategies are deeply rooted in the insights and agendas of the communities we serve. We recognize that sustainable change can only occur when solutions are tailored to the specific context and realities of the community. As such, our approach is iterative, flexible, and responsive, allowing us to adapt to evolving needs and circumstances.

MENTEE has built 26 global partners, 135 global mentors, and we serve 165 mentees from five continents and from 29 countries. Through our programming over the six years of MENTEE, and the three years since MENTEE has built a tech heart and gone global, we have served more than 3,000 individuals.
We believe in the transformative power of mentorship in enhancing learning outcomes and driving personal and professional growth. We recognize that access to quality mentorship can be a critical determinant of success, particularly for underserved populations and those facing barriers to educational and career advancement. By participating in the Solve Learning Challenge, we aim to further our mission of democratizing access to mentorship and empowering individuals to reach their full potential.
As a Solver team, we face various barriers that we hope Solve can help us overcome:
Financial barriers: Developing and scaling our platform requires financial resources to cover expenses such as technology infrastructure, marketing, and operational costs. Solve's network of partners and supporters can provide valuable funding opportunities to support our growth and sustainability.
Technical barriers: Building a robust and user-friendly platform requires expertise in software development, data analytics, and user experience design. Solve can connect us with technical experts and mentors who can offer guidance and support in optimizing our platform and implementing innovative features.
Legal barriers: Navigating legal and regulatory requirements, such as data privacy laws and intellectual property rights, can be complex and resource-intensive. Solve can help us access legal expertise and resources to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and protect our intellectual property.
Cultural barriers: In some communities and cultures, mentorship may not be widely practiced or accepted, leading to cultural barriers to adoption. Solve can support us in developing culturally sensitive approaches to mentorship and fostering a culture of mentorship within diverse communities.
Market barriers: Competing in the crowded edtech and mentorship space requires strategic positioning, effective marketing, and differentiation from competitors. Solve can provide mentorship, networking opportunities, and access to market insights to help us navigate these challenges and establish a strong presence in the market.
By participating in the Solve Learning Challenge, we hope to leverage Solve's resources, expertise, and network to overcome these barriers and advance our solution. We are committed to collaborating with Solve and its partners to create positive social impact and transform the landscape of learning and mentorship worldwide.
Additionally, we would like to offer to support Solve and their community with a free Community Hub to bring together Solvers in one space and further enrich their journey through peer-to-peer collaboration and support. Also, MENTEE currently supports MIT Emerging Talent and would like to offer free partnership to other Solver teams to join our community and benefit from our supports and opportunities so we may all grow and increase our impact together.

Overall, MENTEE stands out as an innovative mentorship ecosystem that not only addresses global problems but also actively works with its community to create impactful solutions and successful outcomes.
Moreover, MENTEE's innovative approach has the potential to catalyze a broader positive impact in our community and for those outside of our community globally within our sector and beyond. Our Partner Gallery supports the missions of all of our partners and the ripple effect of supporting their work actually impacts so many more people which is why our numbers of impact are in fact so much larger. Additionally, MENTEE is democratizing access for everyone no matter who they are or where they are. Our platform will rival LinkedIn as an equitable global ecosystem for positive impact, attracting individuals who need training, support, and opportunities with those who have them, from the caring individual to the forward-thinking organization and company - MENTEE will change how and why we connect with others by giving a reason to our network building and importance to the time and resources we have. The core technology that powers MENTEE has resulted in a sophisticated and very scalable platform:
Overview of Tech Core: MENTEE is developed using cutting-edge web application development technologies to ensure a seamless and intuitive user experience across different devices and platforms. The application was built using React, Python, Flash, and Ant Design. It uses Git Hub, and then Vercel, Heroku, and mongoDB. Additionally, Firebase for login/registration, Twilio, socket.io, and SendGrid for communications, and imgur for profile images. ElvenLabs.io was used to translate our platform, training materials and internal mentee-mentor communications into five languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Dari, and Pashto. Currently, we are finalizing integrating Google Meets into our platform and this will add to our tech core.
Data Analytics and Insights: MENTEE leverages data analytics and insights to track user engagement, monitor performance metrics, and identify trends and patterns within the platform. This data-driven approach enables us to gain valuable insights into user behavior, preferences, and satisfaction levels, allowing us to optimize the platform and enhance the overall user experience.
Communication and Collaboration Tools: MENTEE incorporates communication and collaboration tools to facilitate seamless interaction between mentors and mentees. This includes features such as language of platform and training material translation, messaging systems, video conferencing capabilities, and document sharing functionalities, enabling mentors and mentees to communicate effectively and collaborate on various mentorship activities.

MENTEE began in 2018 as a face-to-face matching mentorship program that followed the traditional model with an inclusive, diversity-centric, and equity-focused twist. We blew all that up and built an innovative tech heart and non-hierarchical program and went global in 2021. We have been working on our global solution for three years.
At Mentee, our commitment to diversity and inclusivity permeates every aspect of our organization, from our team and board to our philosophy and approach. Intentionally diverse, both our team and Board of Directors (BoD) represent a mosaic of cultures and backgrounds, ensuring voices from Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the MENA Region are heard and valued. Our Board of Advisors (BoA) mirrors this diversity, with representation from the MENA region, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Europe, North America, and Africa, reflecting the global scope of our mission. To accommodate the unique challenges posed by different time zones and electricity availability, we maintain flexible board rules, ensuring equitable participation and decision-making processes. We intentionally seek individuals with a diverse range of skills and backgrounds to support Mentee's mission while ensuring regional and cultural representation akin to that of our mentees. Inclusivity is further reinforced through the inclusion of mentee Ambassadors, who provide invaluable insights and guidance, with some mentees even serving on the Board of Advisors. Additionally, our team embodies our dedication to diversity, with members including a Syrian refugee and a representative from Argentina. Our commitment to these principles underscores our deeply held belief in the importance of addressing global challenges with empathy, understanding, and solidarity.
MENTEE operates on a hybrid business model that incorporates elements of both for-profit and social enterprise models. Our primary goal is to address social challenges and create positive impact within communities, particularly focusing on mentorship and education. However, we also recognize the importance of sustainability and financial viability to ensure the longevity and scalability of our initiatives.
Here's an outline of MENTEE's business model:
Fee-for-Service: While MENTEE aims to provide free and accessible services to all, certain programs and personalized mentorship sessions may be offered on a fee-for-service basis for large organizations/institutions or corporations. This model allows us to generate revenue from those who can afford to pay, thereby subsidizing services for our NGOs with fewer resources.
Community Hubs: MENTEE can sell Community Hubs to large organizations/institutions, foundations or corporations for a fee to help sustain our work and support their needs while enlarging our partner network of support.
Partnerships and Collaborations: MENTEE seeks strategic partnerships with educational institutions, corporate entities, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. These partnerships can involve joint programming, sponsorship opportunities, or grants to support our initiatives financially while also expanding our reach and impact.
Donations and Grants: As a social enterprise, MENTEE relies on donations and grants from philanthropic organizations, foundations, and individuals who believe in our mission. These funds supplement our revenue streams and enable us to offer free or subsidized services to marginalized communities.
- Individual consumers or stakeholders (B2C)
MENTEE is dedicated to achieving financial sustainability by broadening its revenue streams to include not only grants but also services. MENTEE actively pursues grant funding to sustain our work. Grants enable us to expand our reach, develop innovative solutions, and strengthen our commitment to creating lasting change for those in need. Another key aspect of our strategy involves selling Community Hubs to foundations, companies, universities, and large NGOs. These Hubs are part of our web application but are independently used by the entity and listed as “Fueled by MENTEE”. The Community Hubs serve as vital centers for collaboration, fostering community that drive positive change globally. By providing a platform for collective action and shared resources, these hubs amplify the impact of voluntary and corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, maximizing their effectiveness in addressing critical social challenges.
MENTEE has successfully brought in a total of $107,000 in grants over the last four years, and for the first time this year, our revenue includes $20,000 for the sale of one of our Community Hubs, of which $12,000 is a $1,000/month administration fee that will continue as long as the entity uses the Hub.
