The Presenting Problem
The specific Global Education Challenge problems we are addressing are: Inadequate access to learning materials and Ineffective teaching of skills needed for people to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Educational resources in Africa are dismal. In poor rural areas, there are no or minimal books or educational tools, no critical thinking skills development, and poor teacher education.
The presenting problem is multifaceted, involving inadequate internet connectivity, a lack of educational resources, and insufficient teacher training, collectively contributing to a substandard education system. The current system relies heavily on rote learning with minimal emphasis on critical thinking or practical application of knowledge.
One in four people in Sub-Saharan Africa does not have access to mobile broadband signals. Moreover, where cellphone penetration is high, its use is effectively limited to voice and text messages; digital downloads and streaming are prohibitively expensive. Only half of those in covered areas use the Internet.
When adequate internet connections are finally established in rural areas, they invariably require more human capital to deploy them effectively; experienced IT administrators and teachers who can usefully incorporate the internet in their classrooms and communities are unavailable. Developing the human capital capacity can take years of on-the-ground training and experience.
Impact of the Problem
The inadequate learning environment resulting from a lack of academic resources and poor teaching practices has yielded abysmal educational attainment in rural Africa. When our executive director asks fifteen to eighteen-year-olds in rural Uganda what the product of five times five is, they usually have no idea and do not understand why they need to know the answer. The scale of the problem is vast, affecting millions of individuals across Africa, impacting countless communities, and hindering the potential for economic and social development.
Consequences of Not Solving the Problem
Poverty of the mind and the spirit are the consequences of the problem. Without access to quality education, individuals in rural African communities face limited opportunities for personal and professional growth, perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality. Moreover, students' lack of critical thinking and problem-solving skills inhibit innovation and adaptation to new situations, crucial competencies in a rapidly changing world.
Emotions the Problem is Creating For Those Involved
The emotional toll on students and teachers in this challenging educational landscape cannot be overstated. Students' frustration with not understanding basic concepts due to insufficient resources and ineffective teaching methods leads to disengagement and a lack of confidence in their abilities. Conversely, teachers feel overwhelmed and undervalued, knowing they lack the resources and training to make a meaningful difference in their students' lives.
Edutek Global has developed a transformative educational tool called the Edupak to provide interactive offline learning to communities with limited or nonexistent internet access. This compact yet powerful system consists of a small antenna, a computer, and a Wi-Fi local area network (LAN) router (see the attached image).
How does it function?
Edupak includes a LAN (“Access Point” in the above diagram) with a 300-meter range capable of connecting up to 80 devices simultaneously, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and interactive smart screens. Coverage can be expanded through bridging to accommodate more users. Users can access interactive AI and interactive Khan Academy, plus thousands of books and videos, all stored on the Edupak.
Technological Features
The proprietary software includes student-appropriate AI and a search feature for all of the books and videos on the server. The search feature in the right-hand corner of the screen allows users to find a wide range of content, from insects to physics.
Display and Interaction: The software can be used with any smart device (phones, tablets, computers, overheads), including, most recently, smart screens with keyboards. This is the most advanced use, and unusual for Africa.
Capacity and Scalability: The small yet powerful 7x8” server facilitates a smooth, responsive user experience, and the system’s capacity for connections can be increased to support larger groups or greater distances.
Cost and Configuration:
The basic Edupak setup, which includes the computer, antenna, and necessary wiring, is priced at $1,000. A higher-end version, available for $2,000, offers increased speed and storage capabilities. Both versions provide invaluable resources, but the higher-end model includes enhanced interactivity features.
Unique Contributions:
Developed by a skilled team led by a Ugandan engineer, Edupak's software is uniquely tailored for no-connectivity environments. We have scanned the environment and have found nothing in Africa that facilitates interactive learning independently of the Internet.
Expanding Educational Horizons:
Edupak has broadened its impact from primary and secondary education to include college and vocational training, with university students accessing and downloading resources for free. It has fostered community interaction, exemplified by students from Mukono discussing educational topics with peers in Gulu via shared resources.
Video of students using Edupak
Edutek Global’s Edupak primarily aims to enrich rural Africa's educational landscape, where limited or non-existent internet connectivity restricts access to quality educational resources. Our target audience encompasses a diverse group with unique needs.
Primary and Secondary School Students:
Young African learners often face significant educational barriers. Classes feature rote memorization and limited access to diverse and engaging education. There is no opportunity for creativity, and students cram before exams. They remember very little of what they are supposed to learn in class. The students respond very positively to the videos we offer, whether they see them on a smart device or a smart screen. Children truly enjoy lessons using the Edupak.
Vocational Learners:
Individuals aiming to acquire practical skills to improve their job prospects or start their own businesses lack access to vocational training resources. There are well over 150,000 vocational training videos, and the demand for access to these is huge.
University Students:
These students need help accessing essential academic resources to support their studies, particularly in areas with unreliable or no internet service. Medical students have often come to our schools to use the free access to medical videos.
Educators and School Administrators:
Rural African teachers and administrators are keen to improve their teaching methods and resources but are constrained by the limited technology and content.
Local Communities, Including Healthcare Services:
The broader community impact includes essential services like local medical clinics, which can benefit from improved data management and information access our technology provides. Community members not affiliated with the host schools access the Edupak for its rich instructional resources, which they use to answer specific questions or to expand their professional knowledge.
How Edupak Addresses These Needs:
Access to Quality Educational Content Offline:
Edupak provides a comprehensive repository of educational and vocational content, enabling learners of all ages to access high-quality resources that enhance their learning experiences and outcomes.
Engagement and Interactivity in Learning:
Interactive smart screens and tablet-based learning apps supercharge engagement, making learning more enjoyable and effective.
Empowerment through Vocational Training:
By offering free access to over 150,000 vocational training videos, we empower individuals with practical skills, opening new employment and entrepreneurship opportunities crucial for economic development in these areas.
Enhanced Teaching Methods:
Modern tools and diverse content enable educators to deliver more effective instruction tailored to their students' needs and contexts. Teachers are “in love” with the Edupak.
Community-Wide Benefits:
The dual use of our technology in educational and community settings, such as healthcare clinics and vocational training centers, not only supports educational needs but also strengthens community services, contributing to the community's overall welfare.
Edutek is deeply rooted in our communities, making us uniquely qualified to deliver the Edupak solution to rural and remote areas in Africa. With twenty years of experience deploying computer-based learning systems in Africa, our team has developed the necessary technical expertise and a profound understanding of the local environments and the specific educational needs of these communities.
Team Composition and Proximity:
Our team comprises individuals either from these communities or who have spent considerable time living and working within them. Our Team Lead has spent twenty years raising funds for and deploying computer systems in Africa. The Ugandan head of IT, who designed the Edupak, resides in Uganda. Our close ties to the community ensure that our solutions are technically sound, culturally sensitive, and appropriately tailored to meet local needs. This proximity fosters genuine empathy and understanding, allowing us to approach our work with respect and commitment to the communities' well-being.
Community-Driven Design and Implementation:
Community members' input, ideas, practices, and agendas heavily guide our approach. For example, observing adults in the community accessing Edupak resources led us to expand our infrastructure to accommodate more users without compromising the quality of service for students. This was exemplified in Kalagi, Uganda, where local adults' use of Edupak overloaded the system. This led us to add an Edupak hub at a local medical clinic in return for agreeing to host the clinics’ medical records. This ensured that educational and medical data needs were met effectively while expanding Edupak access to the broader community.
Moreover, our curriculum design, especially in subjects like social sciences and agriculture, is directly influenced by local knowledge and practices. We recognize that these subjects cannot be effectively taught without considering the local context, so we engage community members in curriculum development. Through observing the actual use of Edupak, we capture valuable local insights that inform our content and teaching strategies, ensuring they are relevant and practical.
Engagement and Empowerment:
Our engagement with the community goes beyond consultation. We involve community members in our projects' testing and implementation phases, ensuring that our solutions meet their needs and are usable in their daily lives. This collaborative approach enhances the relevance and effectiveness of our educational programs and empowers the community by making them active participants in the educational process.
Edutek's strength lies in its team's intimate knowledge of and engagement with the communities we serve. Our two decades of experience have equipped us with the insights and skills to design and implement effective educational solutions. Our community-driven approach ensures that our interventions are accepted and embraced as valuable tools for education and empowerment, helping to transform lives and communities across Africa.
