50%. That’s the percentage of graduates that are employable in India. 50% of the graduates are employable after spending 18 years in the formal education system working towards employment.
In India, the educational system is vast, encompassing 1.5 million schools catering to a staggering 250 million children. Despite this immense scale, a significant majority—over 60%—of these children find themselves attending government schools due to financial constraints barring access to private institutions. However, the grim reality reveals that three out of every four children discontinue their education before reaching college. Even among those who manage to obtain a degree, a mere 50% possess the necessary skills for gainful employment.
India boasts a burgeoning young population that holds great potential to advance the Indian economy, yet the educational system designed to equip them for the workforce remains deeply flawed. Schools persist in emphasizing rote memorization and test-taking, while assessments predominantly focus on cognitive abilities, neglecting other vital forms of learning. Moreover, the pedagogical approaches and curriculum often alienate certain cultural and social groups, failing to address underlying traumas that may hinder learning. Compounding these issues is the widespread learning crisis, wherein a startling six out of ten 13-year-olds struggle to comprehend basic sentences—a concerning indicator of systemic shortcomings. All of these lead to young graduates lacking the skills they require to thrive and sustain in the workforce.
The lack of meaningful employment disproportionately affects underserved populations, trapping them in cycles of poverty. For those who drop out of school, the absence of access to financial and social resources further entrenches their disadvantaged status. Even among college graduates, securing stable employment remains elusive. Many are relegated to the precarious gig economy, devoid of employment security, perpetuating their struggle to break free from poverty's grip.
The advent of artificial intelligence and automation heralds a seismic shift in the job market. Yet, the educational paradigm persists in preparing students for obsolete roles, failing to anticipate the dynamic needs of future employment. The jobs awaiting today's students are yet to be conceptualized, yet the educational system continues to prepare the children for jobs that have gone obsolete.
At the heart of this crisis lies the inadequacies in the design and implementation of schools—a system wherein children spend a substantial 18 years of their formative lives. Despite this substantial investment, the system falls short of its fundamental purpose: to nurture active, socially and economically adept citizens capable of contributing meaningfully to societal progress. Thus, addressing the systemic deficiencies in education to equip young adults for workforce readiness through the redesign of schools emerges as an imperative for India's socio-economic development and the empowerment of its burgeoning youth populace.
Vision:
Our students will to be self-driven adults who are financially literate and workforce ready.
Solution:
We are going to start a redesigned school where learning will be personal to every child’s need, relevant to their communities and the world they will enter, and experiential so they learn by doing.
Own:
We’re will equip students to create their own timetables, from age 11, students will leverage learning in coursera-format learning environments, where they will set their goals and work on meeting them with their mentors in school, these goals will be integrated with the projects that the students will create. Enabling students to build the skills of self-directed learning and the mindset to learn, unlearn and relearn. The online platform where students will make progress, will be tracked by the mentors and facilitators closely to ensure that every child is progressing towards their goal and to support children who are struggling.
Spend:
We will have our school currency from grade 1, students will earn money and spend it on school experience, with increased complexity as students keep going to higher grades, and the financial system in school will have its online banking system that will be created in-house and will enable students to take loans, taxes, invest. Through this medium, students will learn the core skills of financial literacy through experience.
Create:
Creation will be the core part of education. To create something that serves the community. The curriculum that students will learn in school, will be mapped to projects/solutions that students will create. These projects/solutions will address issues in their communities and thus build the skills of project management, but also building depth in their context, understanding the reality that they come from and empower them to be champions of change in their community. Through this projects, students will build the 21st skills they will need that will enable them to access the workforce.
College to Career:
Students will be exposed to various careers opportunities and, as they progress to adolescence, introduced to internships and apprenticeship opportunities aligned to their passion areas so that they can build the skills and explore careers that they may take up in the future. For the same, partnerships with organisations like Antarang, iTeach College to Career, Samata Centre will be crucial because they bring a wealth of experience in the field of college to career readiness.
AI-bot for parents:
We want to create an AI chat that will serve multiple purposes. It will collect data on students' emotional, mental, and physical well-being through set parameters that will be designed in collaboration with industry experts. This data set would be collected through a simple question-and-answer format that parents have to fill, this will need to be a simple whatsapp interaction with multiple language options. This data will be accessible to the parents and school to see how the students are spending their time at home and similarly, the AI will offer additional support needed both in school and at home.
The solution is catered towards working with first-generation learners. These learners belong to families that are from marginalised caste. The impact of the caste system in India is prevalent, there are still barriers to opportunities for people from underserved communities. We will specifically be working with people from Scheduled Tribe(ST) And Scheduled Caste (SC) communities.
In India, Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) face pervasive marginalization and systemic barriers that hinder their access to education, employment, and social opportunities. Some key points highlighting how these communities are underserved:
1. Historical Discrimination: SCs and STs have historically been subject to discrimination and social exclusion based on their caste or tribal identity. This discrimination has manifested in various forms, including social segregation, economic exploitation, and denial of basic rights.
2. Limited Access to Education: Despite efforts to promote inclusive education, SC and ST communities continue to face significant challenges in accessing quality education. Factors such as poverty, lack of infrastructure, and discrimination within educational institutions contribute to low enrollment and high dropout rates among SC and ST students.
3. Economic Disparities: SCs and STs are disproportionately represented among India's poorest communities. Economic marginalization perpetuates a cycle of poverty, limiting access to essential resources such as healthcare, sanitation, and housing.
4. Employment Discrimination: SC and ST individuals often encounter discrimination in the labor market, facing barriers to employment opportunities and wage disparities compared to upper-caste counterparts. Limited access to formal employment contributes to economic insecurity and perpetuates socio-economic inequalities.
5. Health Disparities: SC and ST communities experience disparities in access to healthcare services, leading to higher rates of malnutrition, maternal mortality, and infectious diseases. Limited access to healthcare infrastructure and culturally insensitive healthcare practices further compound health inequalities.
The families we support primarily work in the informal sector, holding occupations such as auto drivers, vegetable vendors, carpenters, and painters. Their monthly household income typically hovers around Rs. 20,000 ($240).
Our school's mission is to empower these families by focusing on their children, the next generation. We provide them with not just academic knowledge but also practical skills and the right mindset for workforce readiness. We aim to cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving, and soft skills like resilience and adaptability.
Beyond education, we create pathways for our students to access stable, dignified jobs offering sustainable incomes and opportunities for growth.
Ultimately, our goal is to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. By empowering children to secure formal employment, we aim to create a lasting impact, enabling economic stability and upward mobility for generations to come.
Our team stands at the forefront of educational innovation, armed with a diverse array of expertise and a shared passion for driving positive change in the realm of education and social development. Comprising seasoned professionals with over a decade of combined experience in education and the broader social development sector, we bring a wealth of knowledge and insight to the table.
Our team is uniquely equipped to deliver this solution because we combine extensive experience in education with a passion for driving social change. Here's what sets us apart:
Decade-Plus Expertise: We have a collective 10+ years of experience in the education field. This translates to a deep understanding of the current educational landscape, its strengths, and its shortcomings. We've witnessed firsthand the evolving needs of students and educators, allowing us to tailor our solution accordingly.
Bridging Education and Social Development: Our team isn't confined solely to the classroom. We also possess experience in the social development sector. This broader perspective allows us to recognize the intricate link between education and other facets of students’ life that hinder them from reaching their goals. It empowers us to create solutions that address not just academic needs, but also the social and emotional factors that influence learning.
Circle Incubator Advantage: We're not just educators – we're also innovators. Being part of the Circle Incubation Program, which is run by Circle, India’s only School Incubation Program. We are supported by a large movement of leaders in the education sector who have run innovative schools and are mentoring us towards building cutting-edge ideas, methodologies, and best practices that will drive positive change within our school.
In-Depth Understanding of Challenges: The team that is leading this endeavour are also formal educators who have worked with the marginalised community they wish to serve. We've actively worked in schools with limited resources. This on ground exposure has allowed us to closely examine the challenges faced by students in such settings. We understand the specific obstacles that hinder their learning and development.
School Redesign for Equity: Based on our real-world experience, we haven't just identified the challenges – we've actively developed solutions. We've re-designed pedagogical approach, inclusive curriculum, holistic assessment measures to specifically cater to the needs of children from marginalized communities. This ensures that our approach is inclusive, responsive, and addresses the unique learning styles and backgrounds of all students.

Currently SeekhShala is in the initial phase. Over the last year, SeekhShala has been running pilots on the ground to test our different elements of the organisations work, our work includes:
On-ground research:
In the past 9 months, we have spent time on the ground with the community that we serve. We’ve shadowed the life of the children that we hope to serve and spent time in their community to understand the lived reality of the children. Through this exercise, we’ve mapped the current realities, the challenges, the hopes and dreams of the community, the parent and the child.
Creating a community board:
As a part of creating an inclusive design that truly serves the needs of the community. SeekhShala has formed a community board that comprises of a School Leader that’s been running a school for underserved communities for 17 years, a student who is from the community that we want to work with, educators who have previously taught in the community and a parent from the community. The idea of this community board is to get feedback about our vision and our work, to ensure that the voices of all our stakeholders are not just heard but incorporated into the design of the solution that we are creating.
Vision-Mission-Action Plan:
We’ve spent time creating a vision-mission document and highlighted key learning experiences fo the students, that will enable them to reach them vision we have set for them. This has been tested out with parents and students to get their feedback of potential pitfalls and bright spots. With this feedback in place we have designed our program.
Piloting the program:
Through the last 9 months, we have piloted different programs that we want to offer to the students in school. These pilots are meant to fine-tune the program, understand the gaps and iterate to make it better. We’ve incorporated the data from the pilot back into the design.
Launch
We are now in the process of launching our school. We hope to start in July 2024 with our first batch of 160 kindergarten students who will be with us till grade 10.
We are deeply committed to ensuring all learners have access to a quality education that enables them to access employment that will further result in economic and social mobility, and we believe our solution has the potential to create schools that are able to redesign how learning can look like in school and shape adults who can contribute positively to society. .
The educational landscape faces numerous challenges, and we are particularly concerned about the failure of the educational system in ensuring a better quality of life for children from marginalised communities. This gap hinders student potential and perpetuates social, economical inequities. Our solution directly addresses this challenge by ensuring every child has access to a learning environment that is personal to their needs, relevant to their community and the world they are going to enter and experiential so they learn by doing.
However, we recognize that our journey doesn't end with developing an innovative solution. To truly make a lasting difference, we need to scale our impact and reach a wider student population. This is precisely why the MIT Solve Challenge presents such a compelling opportunity.
Amplifying Impact Through Mentorship:
We are confident in the potential of our solution, but we also acknowledge the immense value of mentorship in refining our approach. We refuse to scale mediocrity to the vast population of underserved students who deserve to live a life of choice. We want to scale, but do not want to compromise on our core quality, we believe that the MIT Solve's renowned mentorship program connects us with experienced professionals who can guide us in maximizing our social impact without compromising on the quality of education. Their expertise will be instrumental in ensuring our solution is not only effective but also scalable and sustainable in the long run. We aim to further our understanding of social business model and the ways to build successful strategies for growth.
Scaling Our Solution with Financial Support:
Scaling a social business model requires significant resources. The financial support offered by MIT Solve would be a critical catalyst for growth. It would allow us to expand to diverse communities and build strong accounting foundations.
Building a Network for Growth:
Beyond financial support, the MIT Solve network is an invaluable asset. The opportunity to connect with educators, investors, and potential partners who share our vision for educational transformation is extraordinary. This network can open doors to collaborations and partnerships that would significantly accelerate the growth and reach of our solution.
By leveraging the combined power of mentorship, financial support, and network building offered by MIT Solve, we can truly take our solution to the next level. We envision a future where every child, regardless of the life circumstances that they are born into, is able to access a life of choice and dignity through meaningful employment. We believe that with the right support and partnerships, this future can become a reality.
- Business Model (e.g. product-market fit, strategy & development)
- Financial (e.g. accounting practices, pitching to investors)
- Monitoring & Evaluation (e.g. collecting/using data, measuring impact)
- Technology (e.g. software or hardware, web development/design)
Our solutions is innovative because of the following reasons:
Multi-stakeholder approach: Our approach to the solution is multi-faceted, addressing multiple issues that are a hindrance for a child from reaching their full potential, we match the problem in holistic essence with solutions that will address them, instead of meeting the symptoms of the problem we’ve gone deeper to understand the multiple levels at which the challenge is interfering with the vision. Hence, our work involves working with Parents, working on social and emotional well-being, career support, financial support through partnerships, exposure to different experiences that will build a larger view of life.
Meaningful integration of tech: We believe tech can be a huge enabler for transforming the lives of our children, but technology comes with its own ethical and cognitive challenges. While we are ensuring tech integration is happening in school. We also want to ensure that there is a meaningful integration of technology. So that the child understands the limitless possibilities of technology, while also being aware of its endless pitfalls.
Design approach: Our approach to solving the problem is unique. In India, the social sector landscape that is working in the education space is working on improving the existing system. We believe that the design of the existing system is faulty, hence fixing a faulty designed system will not lead to any result. Hence our work is towards redesigning the school system all together. In the Indian context, where the traditional model of system is rigidly held as sacrosanct, challenging the system and redesigning it, is in itself unique.
The proposed project envisions a transformative journey spanning over 25 years, aiming to instigate profound changes in education, workforce readiness, financial literacy, lifelong learning, and social impact. AI-bot for support and data collection:
The implementation of an AI-powered chatbot for parental support and data collection stands as a pivotal initiative within our school's framework. Recognizing the crucial role of parental involvement in a child's educational journey, we are committed to leveraging technology to enhance communication and support between home and school.
The AI chatbot serves a multifaceted purpose, seamlessly integrating support mechanisms and data collection functionalities. One of its primary objectives is to gather comprehensive data on students' emotional, mental, and physical well-being. To ensure accuracy and relevance, parameters for data collection will be collaboratively designed with tech partners, aligning with best practices in child development and well-being.
The data collection process will be user-friendly, catering to the diverse linguistic and technological capabilities of parents. Utilizing a simple question-and-answer format, accessible through widely used platforms such as WhatsApp, we aim to streamline data collection while minimizing barriers to participation. Multiple language options will further enhance accessibility, ensuring that all parents can engage with the chatbot comfortably.
The collected data will serve as a valuable resource for both parents and the school community. Parents will have access to insights into their child's activities and well-being outside of school hours, fostering a deeper understanding of their needs and behaviors. Additionally, the AI chatbot will offer personalized support and guidance based on the data collected, helping parents navigate challenges and optimize their support for their child's development.
Furthermore, the AI chatbot will facilitate communication and collaboration between teachers and parents. By collecting similar data from teachers within the school, the chatbot enables cross-corroboration of student progress and well-being. This dynamic exchange of information strengthens the partnership between home and school, ensuring a holistic approach to supporting student success.
In essence, the AI-powered chatbot represents a dynamic school management system that transcends traditional barriers. By harnessing the power of technology and prioritizing user-friendly design, we aim to create a supportive and inclusive environment where parents, teachers, and students can collaborate effectively to nurture the holistic development of every child.

At Seekshala, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) are the foundation of our work. As co-founders, we come from different genders and vibrant communities within India. This diversity shapes our approach, reminding us that education should empower every single child, regardless of their background. Our approach is crystal clear: to provide top-notch education to marginalized communities, and DE&I plays a crucial role in achieving that.
Here's how we weave DE&I into the tapestry of Seekshala:
Representation Matters: We, the founders, embody the power of diversity. Having a team with varied perspectives allows us to understand the importance of students seeing themselves reflected in their educators and leaders. When children see educators who share their background or gender, it sparks a sense of belonging and fuels their belief in their own potential.
Co-Design: Our apprach towards designing this school is to have all the stakeholders on the decision making table. We believe that the voices of the stakeholders that these programs are designed for, must have a large say in the design of the program. Thus we have set-up various systems through which we are going to get consistent feedback on the design and iterate in our approach.
Culturally Responsive Curriculum and Pedagogy: We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Our curriculum and pedagogy is designed to be culturally responsive, acknowledging and celebrating the rich tapestry of cultures and languages within our student body. Local contexts, stories, and languages are woven into lessons, ensuring students feel valued and connected to their learning journey.
Gender Equity: A Core Value: Equity is at the heart of Seekshala. We actively promote gender equity within our curriculum. This means dismantling harmful stereotypes, ensuring girls and boys have equal opportunities to excel in all subjects, and fostering a classroom environment where everyone's voice is respected and valued.
Inclusive Learning Environments: Every child learns differently. We cater to this beautiful diversity by incorporating a variety of teaching methods and assessments. Beyond that, we create safe and supportive spaces where students feel comfortable exploring, asking questions, and participating actively, regardless of their learning style or ability.
Collaboration is Key: We know we're not alone in this mission. We actively seek partnerships with organizations that share our commitment to DE&I. Collaborating with diverse partners allows us to learn from different perspectives and tap into a wider pool of expertise. This strengthens our ability to serve marginalized communities effectively.
Continuous Improvement: The journey towards DE&I is never-ending. We constantly reflect on our practices, seeking feedback from students, teachers, and community members. This allows us to identify areas where we can improve and ensure our work remains relevant and impactful for the communities we serve.

Building a Sustainable Future: Partnerships and Shared Ownership
At Seekshala, we recognize the importance of financial sustainability to ensure the long-term impact of our work. We've adopted a multi-pronged approach that leverages partnerships with foundations and promotes ownership among our collaborators.
Partnership-Driven Sustainability: For starting schools we are partnering with Family-run foundations, CSR (Corporate Social Responsibilities) wings of various industry to start schools in collaboration where the cost will be shared between the partnership.
Grant Funding: Partnering with foundations allows us to secure vital grant funding. These resources support our core initiatives, pedagogy and curriculum development, teacher training programs, and operational costs. We actively seek foundations that align with our mission of providing quality education to marginalized communities.
High-Net Individuals: We believe that people stand for change and everyone wants to be a part of a movement of change, which is what we’re creating. Schools are ecosystems that have impacted almost every person in this county, we are tapping into the high-net individuals in the region to generate capital to run SeekhShala and redesign schools through individual partners.
Looking Forward: Diversifying Funding Streams
While foundation partnerships are a cornerstone of our current strategy, we're actively exploring additional avenues for financial sustainability. These include:
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Funding: Reaching out to corporations with a focus on education and social responsibility can provide a reliable source of funding.
