O'KANATA

O'KANATA is tackling the issue of the swift decline of Indigenous languages and cultures. According to UNESCO, out of the 7,000 languages spoken worldwide, a significant number are not being passed on to new generations. Specifically, 2,680 Indigenous languages are in grave danger of becoming extinct. In Canada, the situation is especially severe, as Statistics Canada reveals that less than 16% of the Indigenous people is able to communicate in their original languages. This highlights a pressing requirement for initiatives aimed at revitalizing these languages.

Indigenous languages possess distinct perspectives on the world and knowledge systems that are essential for maintaining community identity, cultural continuity, and safeguarding traditional ecological knowledge. The waning of these languages represents more than just a reduction in vocabulary; it signifies a depletion of cultural legacy and historical significance, which is a fundamental aspect of Indigenous peoples' bond with their forebears, territory, and community.

The magnitude of the problem is substantial. Canada has a population of more than 1.6 million individuals that self-identify as Indigenous. However, numerous individuals have experienced a decline in their ability to speak their native languages as a result of historical oppression and the enduring consequences of programs like the residential school system. This issue has a global reach, impacting millions of Indigenous individuals across multiple continents, all of whom are confronted with the gradual disappearance of their linguistic traditions.

The absence of accessible, engaging, and current instruments for language acquisition and cultural education is a significant contributing element to this problem.
