What specific problem are you solving?
ASSISTments provides students with high-quality, immediate feedback and support with Tier 1 math practice, and empowers teachers to deliver responsive, data-driven instruction. Illustrative Math, the signature HQIM that ASSISTments supports, has thousands of open-ended problems (for example, 6,905 that ask students to explain) with no feedback or teacher data.
What is your solution?
Generative AI now creates an opportunity to deliver both immediate feedback to students and, for teachers, scoring suggestions and actionable insights on student misconceptions for open-ended problems. We intend to design an exemplary experience for students and teachers to provide the feedback and data that are the cornerstones of ASSISTments, evidence-based, designed, and well-validated in two gold standard RCTs to drive impact. Preliminary internal RCTs have validated that large language models can provide effective feedback on open-ended problems that build student understanding. Our next phase is to further productize this user experience while also adding a powerful dashboard for teachers with suggested scores and actionable insights into student misconceptions.
Given that we have 5 years of historical data on student misconceptions in Illustrative Math, we plan to build a powerful benchmark dataset to ensure highly trained, accurate insights.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
This year, ASSISTments served 115,000 students, 70% of whom are in Title I schools. We are on a path to 5x’ing our reach over the next 5 years, with strong organic teacher demand and signature partnerships, such as a statewide-scale play with the Maryland State Department of Education. We primarily serve students in grades 3-8, critical years for ensuring Algebra readiness, a gatekeeper of later success. X% of our teachers implement ASSISTments with Illustrative Math, a high-quality math curriculum that is quickly gaining traction nationwide. By adding these high-leverage features to open-response answers, we are supporting teachers in effectively implementing their curriculum so that all students, including those below grade level and historically left behind, can get what they need to succeed in grade-level math.
