The Problem: Limited Access to Quality Education in Kenyan Slums

The Husisha Initiative addresses a critical and persistent problem in Kenya: the educational gap in informal settlements. Despite strides in recent years, many youth and adults living in these communities lack access to quality education, hindering their opportunities for social mobility and economic empowerment. Here's a deeper look at the problem, supported by statistics and sources:

Limited School Access and Overcrowding:

• Statistic: A 2021 report by UNESCO (https://www.unesco.org/gem-report/en) indicates that the primary school net enrolment rate in Sub-Saharan Africa remains below 90%, with significant disparities between urban and rural areas. Informal settlements often fall short of these averages.
• Impact: Overcrowded classrooms and limited teacher resources in public schools compromise the quality of education for students in these areas. They may struggle to receive individual attention or participate effectively in lessons.

Financial Barriers to Learning Materials:

• Statistic: A 2022 study by the World Bank (https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SE.XPD.TOTL.GD.ZS?locations=KE) highlights that out-of-pocket spending on education remains a significant burden for low-income families in Kenya.
• Impact: Textbooks, revision guides, and additional learning materials are often cost-prohibitive for families living in informal settlements. This creates an uneven playing field and limits access to resources that could enhance learning outcomes.

Lack of Infrastructure and Connectivity:

• Statistic: According to a 2023 report by Alliance for Affordable Internet (https://a4ai.org/), internet penetration rates in Sub-Saharan Africa remain below 50%. Within informal settlements, access may be even lower due to limited infrastructure and affordability issues.
• Impact: Traditional e-learning initiatives often require reliable internet connectivity, which many residents of informal settlements lack. This excludes them from valuable educational resources that could bridge the learning gap.

Unengaging Teaching Methods:

• Source: Anecdotal evidence from community leaders and educators in Nairobi's informal settlements suggests a need for more engaging and interactive teaching methods in schools.
• Impact: Traditional rote learning methods may not cater to diverse learning styles and can disengage students, leading to decreased motivation and poorer academic performance.

Disconnect Between Education and Real-World Skills:

• Statistic: The 2022 Kenya National Bureau of Statistics Labour Market Report (https://www.knbs.or.ke/download/quarterly-labour-force-report-2021_quarter_1/) indicates a youth unemployment rate of over 39%.
• Impact: The current curriculum may not adequately equip students with the skills needed to thrive in the job market or pursue entrepreneurial ventures.

The combined effect of these factors is a significant educational gap for youth and adults living in Kenyan slums. Erevu's accessible e-learning platform directly addresses these issues by providing a user-friendly, curriculum-aligned, and engaging learning experience that overcomes financial limitations and infrastructure challenges.

Our current research efforts focus on formative evaluation methods to gather user feedback and inform platform improvements. However, we recognize the importance of moving towards summative research in the future.

Formative Research:

1. User Surveys and Focus Groups: We conduct periodic user surveys and focus groups to gather feedback on user experience, content effectiveness, and perceived learning gains. This qualitative data provides valuable insights into user satisfaction, areas of strength, and opportunities for improvement.
2. In-App Analytics: Erevu integrates features that track user behavior within the platform. We analyze data on content completion rates, time spent on modules, and engagement with gamified elements. This helps us understand user preferences and identify areas where content might need adjustments to maximize engagement and learning.
3. Pre- and Post-Testing (Pilot Studies): We have conducted pilot studies in select communities, implementing pre-tests to assess baseline knowledge in core subjects aligned with the Kenyan curriculum. After a designated period of Erevu usage, post-tests are administered to gauge potential improvements in learning outcomes. While these pilot studies provide early indications of effectiveness, they lack control groups and may be influenced by external factors.

Future Research Plans:

• Longitudinal Studies: We plan to conduct longitudinal studies to track the long-term impact of Erevu on learners' educational attainment, skill development, and potential employment opportunities. This will provide a more comprehensive picture of Erevu's effectiveness in empowering users and contributing to their socio-economic mobility.
• Randomized Control Trials (RCTs): In collaboration with academic researchers, we aim to design and implement RCTs to establish a stronger causal link between Erevu usage and improved learning outcomes. This would involve randomly assigning a group of learners to use Erevu while another group receives a different intervention or no intervention (control group). Comparing learning progress between these groups would provide more robust evidence of Erevu's effectiveness.

Foundational Research:

We continuously conduct literature reviews and desktop research to stay updated on the latest advancements in e-learning methodologies, best practices for mobile learning platforms, and the specific needs of youth learners in low-resource settings. This research informs the development of new content modules, gamification strategies, and overall platform design.

The Husisha Initiative is committed to building a strong evidence base for Erevu's effectiveness. While our current research focuses on formative evaluations to improve the platform based on user feedback and engagement data, we are actively planning future studies that utilize pre-post testing with control groups and aim to conduct RCTs in collaboration with academic partners.
