The Problem

Even after escaping their traffickers, survivors face legal issues like destroyed credit, identity theft, arrests from forced criminality and other legal impacts of their victimization. These legal issues block survivors’ access to employment, housing, education and financial aid: all essential elements for rebuilding their lives.

The Solution

ALIGHT Mobilizing Justice connects human trafficking survivors to direct legal services from specialized pro bono attorneys.

Survivors are screened by ALIGHT Community Partner advocates, or by calling the ALIGHT Intake Advocate (collectively, the advocates). The advocates then translate the survivor’s case into legal terminology and post it to our app. The app functions like a marketplace, matching survivors’ legal needs with pro bono attorneys. Attorneys receive targeted, real-time notifications via the app and offer their expertise in areas such as family law, criminal defense, and more. Once an attorney accepts a matter, they are connected with the survivor. ALIGHT supports survivors throughout their entire legal journey.

For attorneys, ALIGHT offers a structured pro bono program that delivers targeted and discrete requests from pre-screened survivors directly to their phones. This tech not only helps attorneys fulfill their pro bono requirements but also provides them with opportunities to up-skill in trauma-informed lawyering.

Stats

434 survivors connected with attorneys as of April 2026.
