Biochar production

Team Leader
Victor Jummai Tela
Our solution involves producing biochar by converting agricultural waste through pyrolysis. Biochar is a carbon-rich material that, when added to soil, enhances fertility, improves water retention, and sequesters carbon, thus reducing greenhouse gases. We collaborate with local farmers to source agricultural residues, process them into biochar using efficient,low-emission technologies and then distribute the biochar back to the farming communities. This approach not only...

What specific problem are you solving?
In Nigeria, many farmers face declining soil fertility, leading to reduced crop yields and food insecurity. Traditional fertilizers are often expensive and can degrade soil health over time. Additionally, improper disposal of agricultural waste contributes to environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. This situation affects millions of smallholder farmers, exacerbating poverty and hindering sustainable agricultural development.
What is your solution?
Our solution involves producing biochar by converting agricultural waste through pyrolysis. Biochar is a carbon-rich material that, when added to soil, enhances fertility, improves water retention, and sequesters carbon, thus reducing greenhouse gases. We collaborate with local farmers to source agricultural residues, process them into biochar using efficient,low-emission technologies and then distribute the biochar back to the farming communities. This approach not only improves crop yields but also promotes environmental sustainability.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our primary beneficiaries are smallholder farmers in rural Nigeria, particularly in Nasarawa State. These farmers often lack access to affordable soil enhancers and face challenges with declining soil productivity. By providing them with biochar, we enable them to rejuvenate their soils naturally, leading to increased crop yields and improved food security. Moreover, by purchasing agricultural waste from these farmers for biochar production, we offer them an additional income stream, thereby enhancing their economic resilience.
