What specific problem are you solving?
Unpredictable weather, rising temperatures, and irregular rainfall are severely affecting global agriculture, reducing productivity by 70% and causing billions in losses. By 2050, a 2°C temperature rise will further worsen these challenges. In Tanzania, agriculture contributes 30% of GDP and employs 70% of the population but is highly vulnerable to climate change. Smallholder farmers, rural women, and youth who dominate the sector-face declining yields by 70% and rising 10 times costs for irrigation, pest & floods control, fertigation and post harvest losses. Without urgent climate-smart solutions, economic growth will slow, inequalities will deepen, and food security will be threatened. Immediate action is needed to protect livelihoods and enhance resilience.
What is your solution?
FEED 2050 is an AI-powered, offline-enabled platform for precision irrigation and crop management that provides nutrition focused farmers with low-carbon farming services. In response to erratic weather patterns, prolonged droughts, and resource scarcity caused by climate change, FEED 2050 leverages IoT sensors and satellite data to optimize the use of water, energy, fertilizers, and pesticides-reducing waste, emissions, and costs. With portable and shared smart irrigation devices powered by solar energy systems, the platform eliminates the need for diesel pumps, drastically lowering greenhouse gas emissions and supporting a transition to clean energy in agriculture. Farmers access the platform via WhatsApp messaging and Chabot, enabling device rentals, expense tracking, and pay-as-you-irrigate and credit-based services. With offline capability, edge computing, and USSD/SMS backup, FEED 2050 ensures access in remote areas, enabling vulnerable farmers to adopt climate-smart solutions. Its AI tools support early warnings for floods and droughts, smart application of inputs, and predictive analytics for yield planning, empowering farmers adapting to climate shocks and build resilience. The platform further contributes to zero-carbon agriculture by minimizing fertilizer and pesticide overuse-cutting emissions from chemical inputs-while supporting carbon-smart practices through digital training. Integrated financial tools and certified buyer linkages help farmers grow sustainably and profitablyhttps://youtu.be/YWEBQBInIE0
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Globally, there are 500 million smallholder farmers. This platform targets 100 million nutrition focused farmers aged 18 to 45 years coming from Global south and living in rural areas on less than $2 per day. Currently 1,500 farmers who 70% are women and youth living in rural Tanzania have been using FEED 2050 platform. These farmers are critical to global food security and face increasing threats from extreme weather events. They are marginalized and vulnerable to climate change due to limited assets and recovery mechanisms, which push them deeper into poverty and hinder their efforts to escape it. FEED 2050 empowers nutrition focused smallholder farmers facing droughts, erratic rainfall, over-use of fertilizer and pesticides, and degraded soils-by providing AI-powered, solar-based irrigation and crop management tools. The platform reduces water use by 60%, energy by 40%, and cuts input costs through precision application of fertilizers and pesticides, boosting yields by up to 300%. Accessible via WhatsApp, SMS, and USSD, it ensures digital inclusion for rural women and youth. Real-time weather forecasts, early warnings, and satellite monitoring help farmers adapt to climate shocks, improve productivity, access finance, and build long-term climate resilience for sustainable food security. https://youtu.be/25KbRLsFFmo?feature=shared https://youtu.be/pdY2BjdPIP8?feature=shared
