What specific problem are you solving?
The World Economic Forum estimates that 3.5 billion people in last-mile rural areas face difficulty accessing healthcare, including 500 million in Africa. In Uganda, 80% of the population lives in rural areas, where healthcare access is severely limited. According to UNICEF, 18 mothers die daily in Uganda, and 1 in 11 children do not survive past their fifth birthday, mostly due to preventable causes. Communicable diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis further increase mortality rates. Healthcare access barriers include poverty, low education levels, long distances to health facilities (12 km on average), and poor service delivery. Without strong community health systems, many rural residents forego necessary care, leading to worsened health outcomes.
What is your solution?
The MOBIKLINIC CHP Tool is a mobile application designed to empower Community Health Providers (CHPs) in rural and underserved areas. It enables CHPs to deliver essential healthcare services, including maternal and child healthcare, immunizations, and disease management. The app provides digital tools for patient data collection, health program tracking, and real-time decision support, even in areas with limited internet. Using Simprints’ ethical mobile biometrics, CHPs register and verify patients through facial or fingerprint scanning, ensuring accurate health records. This biometric functionality was piloted from 2023 to 2024, reaching over 2,500 beneficiaries and increasing vaccination coverage. The app also facilitates remote consultations with MobiKlinic doctors, AI-driven guidance on vaccines and referrals, and geolocation support for health facilities and ambulances. By digitizing health services, MOBIKLINIC improves healthcare accessibility, reduces long distances patients must travel for care, and streamlines data management. The platform ensures more efficient, data-driven healthcare delivery, strengthening community health systems.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
MOBIKLINIC serves Community Health Providers (CHPs) and the rural populations they serve in remote, underserved areas, particularly in Uganda and Kenya. CHPs are often the first and only point of contact for healthcare in Uganda, yet they lack adequate tools, training, and resources to provide comprehensive care. The rural populations in Uganda and Kenya face challenges like long travel distances to health centers, poverty, and weak health systems, which limits their access to essential health services. MOBIKLINIC empowers CHPs with a mobile application that provides real-time health data, patient management tools, and decision-making support, even in areas with limited internet connectivity. By equipping CHPs with these digital tools, MOBIKLINIC enables them to deliver maternal and child health care, immunizations, and disease management more efficiently, directly in the communities. MOBIKLINIC improves access to timely, quality care, reduces the need for long-distance travel, and ultimately enhances health outcomes, particularly by addressing preventable maternal and child deaths and communicable diseases.
