What specific problem are you solving?
In Rwanda, over 60,000 abortions occur annually, most of them unsafe, resulting in 24,000 complications, many untreated. Recent Rwanda Biomedical Center reports highlight the gap: in 2021, only 1,035 women accessed safe abortion services, with slightly higher but still insufficient numbers in 2022 (1,384) and 2023 (1,959). This represents only 2% of women needing abortion in Rwanda, while 98% resort to unsafe methods. Despite legal reforms in 2019 allowing abortion under specific conditions without a court order, access remains severely limited due to provider bias, stigma, and lack of accurate information.
This is not just a national issue. Globally, 45% of abortions are unsafe, with Sub-Saharan Africa accounting for nearly 25% of these cases. Unsafe abortion is the fourth leading cause of maternal death in Rwanda and leads to enormous health, social, and economic consequences. In 2019 alone, complications from unsafe abortions cost Sub-Saharan Africa an estimated $228 million.
AASAPFinder addresses this gap by providing confidential, accessible, and accurate digital tools that guide users to legal, stigma-free, safe abortion services empowering women and girls to make informed decisions and access care without fear and delay.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
AASAPFinder directly serves young women and girls of reproductive age in Rwanda, especially those in rural, low-income, and underserved communities who face multiple barriers to safe, legal abortion. Our target population is underserved in three key ways: they don’t know their legal rights, they can’t find trusted facilities, and they fear judgment or criminalization. Parents or guardians in charge of girls under 18 and male partners seeking accurate guidance are also our secondary users.
We address their needs by offering geolocated real-time provider mapping, legal guidance, pregnancy dating, and anonymous multilingual support-including a toll-free hotline and the platform ensures legal, and safe abortion care is no longer a mystery or a risk. Through empowering its users with dignity, clarity, and choice to bridge these systemic gaps, AASAPFinder reduces maternal harm, builds trust in health systems, and restores reproductive autonomy, providing that ethical tech can reach the last mile and catalyze long-term health equity. To enhance its reach, AASAPFinder goes beyond technology by bridging the providers' biases through training healthcare providers on values transformation and attitudes transformation to provide compassionate non-judgemental patient care. This ensures that health providers are stigma-free and patient-centered, improving both service delivery and user experience.
