What specific problem are you solving?
With more than 35 years of tutoring experience, I've seen what helps struggling students really "get" math. As math progresses, an increasing number of mistakes are with foundational material.
The cumulative effect of these little mistakes is tremendous. When a student gets an advanced math problem wrong, they rarely wonder if they made a distribution mistake, an exponent error, or multiplied 2×4=6. But everybody does it - as the current material gets harder, little mistakes get more common.
Epiphanie helps students learn to catch those mistakes by listening instead of telling, with patient guidance rather than a quick solution. In doing so, we help students build confidence in their own abilities, making math make sense again.
We've designed Epiphanie to work with the people surrounding students. Teachers in advanced math have little time to give feedback on homework, and not much more for tests. We aim to change that. With Epiphanie, teachers and tutors can see a high-level snapshot of the types of mistakes being made by a student, a class, or an entire school of students at a glance.
This is particularly valuable for underserved communities, who students often don't have people to help personally every day.
What is your solution?
Epiphanie is a web-based application available on desktop, mobile, and tablet devices to help students with math. Students or teachers can enter any math problems, and students can work on them step by step, getting appropriate levels of hints along the way to help them catch their own mistakes. Entry can be text-based, GUI, or through our math handwriting recognition interface.
Our system is based on a math engine (SymPy, Python, and Django), that serves as our system's objective view of reality, ensuring that the math is correct. We provide advice as students work through the problems based on our library of proprietary algorithms to detect and help students catch common mistakes in their math. When they do make a mistake, we don't immediately tell them what's wrong, but share appropriate advice based, honed through our integration with ChatGPT.
Epiphanie is also designed to invite teachers and integrate with class curricula, including LMS systems like Canvas, Schoology, or Google Classroom. Teachers can share assignments, review work and leave feedback, examine student performance, or see an overview of which problems the class had the most trouble with before the next day's lesson.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Epiphanie is designed for math students from 7th grade through college, including those with gaps and language barriers. We have plans to extend to analytical science classes such as physics and chemistry.
By helping students catch their own mistakes, Epiphanie helps students realize that they really *do* understand math as it gets more complex, gaining confidence to continue with more advanced analytical studies. Epiphanie has a particularly strong impact in underserved communities, where students often don't have regular access to parents or teachers who can help with advanced math material. The immediate feedback allows students to catch their own mistakes, and our learning community capabilities allow their teacher or tutors to see trends in their math progress when they do have a chance to meet with someone who can help.
For teachers, Epiphanie is a game-changer. Most teachers have little time to give feedback on homework, and not much more for tests . Epiphanie changes that. A teacher can quickly see which problems students had the most trouble with yesterday and what types of mistakes they made, focusing today's class on the right material.
Faster feedback means that classes are more relevant and more helpful to students in learning the material!
