What specific problem are you solving?
In East Africa, smallholder farmers produce up to 75% of the region’s food. How ever, poor and inefficient farming practices lead to low crop yields, poor-quality produce and significant post-harvest losses which is estimated at 30-40%. These losses are primarily due to inadequate storage facilities, lack of access to modern agricultural knowledge (about fertilizers, seasons, seeds or pesticides to use) and market inefficiencies. As a result, farmers struggle to achieve economic stability hence perpetuating cycles of poverty and food insecurity.
Globally, food waste contributes to approximately 8-10% of greenhouse gas emissions worsening climate change. poor and inefficient farming methods also lead to soil degradation, water overuse and biodiversity loss which threatens the environmental sustainability. The economic impact of food loss and waste is costing the global economy nearly $1 trillion annually. These issues disproportionately affect vulnerable communities, particularly in developing regions where limited access to resources and education compounds the challenges.

LYN AI is a digital platform designed to empower smallholder farmers with personalized actionable farming advice delivered in local languages and easy-to-understand comic-style formats. Our solution leverages artificial intelligence to provide tailored recommendations on sustainable farming practices in order to help farmers improve crop yields, reduce post-harvest losses and adapt to climate challenges. LYN AI is accessible via the already widely used WhatsApp which makes it a user-friendly interface even in low-internet areas. It uses AI to analyze local farming conditions, weather patterns and crop data to generate customized advice. It combines technology with culturally relevant communication methods in order to bridges the gap between traditional farming knowledge and modern agricultural techniques. More accurate farming minimizes costs and environmental impact by using resources efficiently because farmers make good decisions regarding fertilizers, seeds or pesticides to use etc. Integrating digital methods can enhance inclusive scaling of extension activities.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
LYN AI aims at enhancing food security for over 70% of the region who are made up of smallholder farmers in rural East Africa and underserved communities. The almost impossible nature of the work of these farmers is as a result of some hindrances such as lack of access to modern agricultural information, inadequate storage facilities, market inefficiencies, which in the end result in low crop yields, post-harvest losses of 30-40% and economic instability. A good number of farmers are underprivileged and therefore can't use the facilities needed to facilitate sustainable farming hence the already existing cycle of poverty and food insecurity.
The immediate provision of personal advice for farmers who do not have a read of be able to do it in their local dialect using simple-to-follow tips in the form of comic strips has been possible due to the great support the LYN AI has given. LYN AI uses AI to analyze the local conditions and then gives the farmers a solution to the problems of productivity, reduce losses and adapt to climate challenges.
