Our solution is the local production of affordable organic fertilizer made from animal manure and forest-based biomass such as leaves, crop residues, and non-timber forest products. This fertilizer is rich in nutrients and improves soil structure, water retention, and long-term fertility without the environmental harm or high costs of chemical alternatives. We collect from the communities who are our suppliers...

What specific problem are you solving?
We are solving the critical problem of fertilizer scarcity in Burundi, where over 95% of raw materials for chemical fertilizers are imported. A national shortage of foreign currency has drastically reduced fertilizer production, making them unaffordable and inaccessible for smallholder farmers, who make up the majority of the population. Over 85% of Burundians depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, with 75% living in rural areas (2024 Burundi Agriculture and general census of population) These communities are experiencing rapidly declining soil fertility due to deforestation, unsustainable farming, and lack of soil nutrients. Without access to affordable fertilizers, farmers face poor crop yields, food insecurity, and deepening poverty, Women and youth, who play key roles in agriculture, are especially vulnerable. This is not just a local issue: globally, millions of smallholders face similar challenges tied to fertilizer price shocks and import dependency, leading to food insecurity and poor living conditions for local communities.
What is your solution?
Our solution is the local production of affordable organic fertilizer made from animal manure and forest-based biomass such as leaves, crop residues, and non-timber forest products. This fertilizer is rich in nutrients and improves soil structure, water retention, and long-term fertility without the environmental harm or high costs of chemical alternatives. We collect from the communities who are our suppliers the low materials, The mixture is processed through composting and natural fermentation techniques that accelerate decomposition and nutrient enrichment. The result is a high-quality, odor-free organic fertilizer that can be used on a wide range of crops. From the trees we give to communities to be planted in their fields, back to these communities to supply us with the raw materials we use in our biofermentation procedures, we also produce a bioactivation that all small-scale farmers can use to speed up their composting process in less than 5 days. Based on our simple technology, we also produce a bio-animal growth booster that is beneficial to animal nutrition and health. We use simple, low-cost tools and local knowledge to make production accessible even in remote areas.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves smallholder farmers in rural Burundi, especially women and youth who make up the majority of the agricultural workforce but remain the most underserved. These communities rely heavily on degraded land for their livelihoods and face limited access to affordable and effective fertilizers. Most cannot afford chemical fertilizers due to high costs and limited supply, resulting in low productivity, food insecurity, and persistent poverty. By producing and distributing affordable organic fertilizers locally, our solution directly supports these farmers in restoring soil health and increasing crop yields. Women and youth are not only the end users but also active participants in the value chain as producers, trainers, and distributors. This inclusive approach creates employment, builds skills, and strengthens economic resilience in communities that are often excluded from formal agricultural markets and support systems. The solution also enhances environmental sustainability by reducing deforestation pressures, minimizing chemical use off, and promoting regenerative agriculture. As soil fertility improves and yields increase, farmers grow more food, earn more income, and reinvest in their land and families. In doing so, we break the cycle of land degradation and poverty, creating long-term impact for over 500,000 people across our target regions.
