What specific problem are you solving?
The specific problem we are addressing is the lack of safe and accessible abortion services for women, particularly in rural areas, regions facing humanitarian crises, or where abortion is highly restricted and stigmatized. Every year, 73 million women undergo abortions, and 45% of these are unsafe, with the majority of unsafe abortion-related deaths occurring in developing countries in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Across Latin America, restrictive abortion laws, systemic barriers, and widespread misinformation severely undermine reproductive autonomy, disproportionately affecting women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals. In this regard, limited access to contraception and high rates of unintended pregnancies contribute to a hard reality: 3.7 million unsafe abortions occur annually in Latin America and the Caribbean, leading to 4,000 preventable deaths and countless physical and emotional complications. These challenges are further amplified by global political shifts, including in the United States, where restrictions on reproductive rights, such as the reinstatement of the Global Gag Rule and USAID funding cuts, have increased the vulnerability of women and girls in accessing essential SRH care. In response, we have launched Aya Contigo, a solution that provides culturally relevant and accessible digital support, helping women access reliable SRH information and navigate safe care.
What is your solution?
Aya Contigo is our award-winning digital platform that provides emotional and navigational support for abortion and contraception journeys. Co-created with users and other stakeholders, it is rooted in harm reduction principles and provides accurate information on safe abortion methods, personalized contraception guidance, and live emotional, navigational, and follow-up support with peer counsellors. Aya Contigo offers interactive tools, abortion resources, and real-time chat support via WhatsApp or app led by Global South peer counselors and grounded in three core pillars: -Mobile App that provides harm reduction information to support comprehensive abortion and informed contraception choices. -Aya Care Team offers virtual peer accompaniment and referrals to trusted SRH services and resources. -Community Engagement through grassroots networks and initiatives to strengthen knowledge, advocacy, and community leadership. Aya Contigo is a mobile-first Progressive Web App that utilizes wireless technology to offer real-time, secure, and private access to reproductive and sexual health resources. In 2025, we launched Aya Contigo 2.0, a more user-friendly and accessible version, expanding our reach across Latin America, the U.S. We will also integrate AI-augmented care to enhance counselor support, enable 24/7 availability, and optimize data management for scalable, sustainable live-chat services
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Aya is currently focused on Venezuela, the United States, and, more recently, Spanish-speaking Latin American (LATAM) countries. Our users are primarily Spanish-speaking individuals of reproductive age seeking abortion or contraception information and services. This includes vulnerable low-income women, youth, survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and those living in highly restrictive settings across the Americas. Since 2022 and 2023, we have actively targeted users in Venezuela and the United States, but we have also seen organic demand across Latin America. As a Spanish-first solution, Aya provides critical information on accessing safe abortion care, making it a valuable resource in the region. Today, Aya Contigo continues to scale, offering culturally responsive, stigma-free sexual and reproductive health (SRH) support to marginalized communities, including immigrants, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) populations, and those in rural or underserved areas.
