What specific problem are you solving?
The tech and engineering workforce is losing thousands of promising professionals—not for lack of talent, but for lack of support. Each year, nearly 14,000 first generation/low-income college students get close to the finish line of a tech degree, only to fall short due to modest financial barriers and limited access to career-building opportunities. These students often lack the networks, capital, and insider knowledge their more affluent peers rely on to secure internships, attend conferences, and launch their careers. Last Mile Education Fund addresses this gap. Since 2020, we’ve provided over $12 million in rapid-response funding to 10,000+ striving students, resulting in a 74% graduation rate—far above the national average for financially vulnerable students. We are currently serving over 4,000 students annually and scaling rapidly to meet growing demand. While many initiatives focus on recruiting students into tech pathways, Last Mile is the only solution focused on getting them through college and into the workforce. Now, we’re scaling our model with a tech-forward, AI-driven tool that connects students to personalized career development support—closing the advising and access gap at scale. This proposal directly addresses a critical, solvable failure in the pipeline—unlocking overlooked talent and advancing equity in the innovation economy.
What is your solution?
Our solution is Embark—a generative AI-powered app that delivers personalized, scalable career launch support to financially vulnerable tech and engineering students nearing graduation. Built on Last Mile’s exclusive dataset of over 10,000 students—alongside proprietary content from ecosystem partners, academic institutions, and employer insights—Embark provides fine-tuned, actionable guidance based on real student journeys and proven success pathways. Through a conversational AI onboarding flow, students input preferences like target companies, relocation interest, and location. The app then delivers curated, dynamic recommendations on resume-building, job and internship opportunities, interview prep tailored to specific companies, portfolio reviews, conferences, networking opportunities, and more—precisely aligned to where they are in their journey. There is nothing like this available for this population. These students—many of whom are first-generation, financially precarious —don’t have access to traditional networks, career coaches, or recruiters. Embark fills that gap. It’s a digital mentor, recruiter, and advisor in one—available 24/7. This is a disruptive innovation that levels the playing field. For employers, it unlocks a rich pipeline of overlooked, job-ready talent. For students, it opens a door that was never built for them—and guides them through it with care, precision, and power.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
This solution is for the students who have made it close to the finish line of a tech career—but at the most critical launch moments, they’re left to figure it out alone. Our AI-powered application is meant to ensure that never happens again. It’s a first-of-its-kind tool—deeply informed by the lived experiences of over 10,000 Last Mile students, our relationships to ecosystem partners, academic institutions, and corporate employers that support this talent, and powered by exclusive data, experience, and insights from those who know this journey best. It offers not generic advice, but a personalized, trusted path forward: connecting students to the opportunities, resources, and real-world guidance they need to not just land a job, but launch a career. This is more than a technology app. It’s equity in action. It’s a bridge where none existed. It’s the right tool, built for the right students, at exactly the right time -- because talent is everywhere, so opportunity should be too.
