What specific problem are you solving?
The Colombian Ministry of Education has identified that one of the main reasons why children and adolescents drop out of formal education is the fact of failing an academic year. This situation is aggravated by the lack of accompaniment necessary to acquire the required knowledge, especially in a country like Colombia, where classrooms usually have more than 40 students. This situation makes it difficult for the education system to guarantee uniform progress for all students, resulting in a significant delay for some students who do not achieve the level of their peers, who do not have support at home to catch up, either because of parental responsibilities or because parents do not have the necessary knowledge to provide this support. It is crucial to address this problem if we want to break the cycles of poverty, since it has been shown that access to education and information is a determining factor in overcoming poverty.
What is your solution?
● Provide virtual academic support in fundamental areas such as mathematics, language and English to children and adolescents in vulnerable situations, in order to strengthen their skills and knowledge.
● Offer a preparation service for the university entrance exam in Colombia, focused on the development of key competencies, with the purpose of increasing opportunities for access to higher education for young beneficiaries.
After the participation of children and adolescents in the project, they have experienced improvements in their academic performance, acquiring skills in key areas such as mathematics, language, English and biology. This qualitative change is measured by the results in the grade reports prepared by each of the educational entities, which are delivered every six months, where the student's performance in each of the subjects is evaluated and the results are intended to demonstrate the overcoming of the minimum competencies established for each grade, in each of the subjects where the accompaniment is provided.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
The project arose in response to the need to provide academic support to children and adolescents in vulnerable situations, exacerbated during the 2020 pandemic, aged between 6 and 17 years old. These reinforcements focus on the fundamental areas of mathematics, language and English, as well as homework tutoring. The educational accompaniment seeks to complement formal education and guarantee the permanence of these children in the educational system. During 2024, the project carried out 1,601 academic reinforcement sessions and 179 homework tutoring sessions.
It is important to note that the project operates in close collaboration with public and private schools, which refer children and adolescents who have been identified as requiring this support to improve their school performance. Although the project is open to anyone who requests it, this direct alliance with local educational institutions allows us to maximize the impact and reach those who need it most.
