What specific problem are you solving?
Plastic waste pollution is a critical environmental issue in Ghana, with over 1.1 million tons of plastic waste generated annually—only 5% of which is recycled. The rest clogs drains, pollutes waterways, and creates breeding grounds for diseases, especially in low-income and peri-urban communities. In areas like Ashaiman and other parts of Greater Accra, the consequences are immediate: frequent flooding, poor sanitation, and rising health risks affect thousands of residents.
Globally, the plastic waste crisis affects over 2 billion people in countries lacking effective waste management systems. Contributing factors include a lack of awareness, poor recycling infrastructure, and limited market demand for recycled products.
EcoBricks addresses this problem by converting plastic waste into durable pavement bricks. Our solution not only reduces pollution but also provides affordable building materials for local infrastructure projects. By transforming waste into value, we’re creating a circular economy model that empowers informal waste collectors, reduces flooding, and promotes greener urban development.
Through partnerships with communities and institutions, we aim to scale impact across Ghana and West Africa, helping to solve a global crisis with a local, innovative approach.
What is your solution?
EcoBricks is an innovative building solution that transforms plastic waste into durable pavement bricks. It helps reduce environmental pollution while providing affordable and eco-friendly construction materials.
Here’s how it works:
We collect used plastic items like water sachets, bags, and containers from communities and waste collectors. These plastics are cleaned, shredded, and mixed with sand and eco-safe additives. This mixture is then heated and compressed using simple recycling equipment to form strong pavement bricks.
The final product is water-resistant, long-lasting, and ideal for paving walkways, compounds, and roads. Unlike regular concrete bricks, EcoBricks are more affordable, lighter, and help reduce flooding by clearing plastic waste from the environment.
We also plan to enhance our bricks with fire-resistant and water-repellent coatings using nanotechnology in future upgrades.
EcoBricks is more than just a brick it’s a clean, smart way to tackle plastic waste and build greener communities.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
EcoBricks serves low-income and underserved urban and peri-urban communities in Ghana, where plastic waste pollution and poor infrastructure severely impact daily life. These communities face frequent flooding, poor sanitation, and limited access to affordable building materials. At the same time, many young people and informal waste collectors struggle with unemployment and unstable incomes.
EcoBricks directly improves their lives by turning plastic waste into valuable construction products. We buy plastic waste from local collectors, providing them with a steady income. Our production process also creates green jobs in collection, sorting, manufacturing, and distribution empowering youth and women with skills and opportunities.
For residents, EcoBricks offers affordable, durable paving solutions that reduce flooding, improve walkways, and enhance living conditions. For construction companies and local governments, we provide a sustainable alternative to traditional concrete bricks supporting environmentally responsible development.
By addressing both environmental and economic challenges, EcoBricks creates a cleaner, safer, and more resilient future for the people who need it most.
