What specific problem are you solving?
Problem Statement Green Creek Eco Farm Ltd. addresses organic waste mismanagement, unsustainable animal feed production, and soil degradation through a circular economy model. Scale of the Problem: Uganda generates 2.5 million tons of organic waste annually, with 80% left to rot or burned, releasing methane (CH₄), a greenhouse gas 25x more potent than CO₂. Traditional animal feed relies on soybean and fish meal, driving deforestation and overfishing, with global soy production causing 4 million hectares of deforestation annually. 60% of Ugandan smallholder farmers struggle with soil depletion, over-reliance on synthetic fertilizers, and high livestock feed costs. Who is Affected? 10+ million Ugandan farmers face declining crop yields due to poor soil health. Animal feed prices have surged 35% in 5 years, reducing profits for poultry, aquaculture, and pig farmers. Factors Addressed: Diverting 50,000+ tons of waste annually into insect-based protein and organic fertilizer. Lowering livestock feed costs by 30% through BSF meal. Reducing synthetic fertilizer use, restoring soil fertility, and improving climate resilience.
What is your solution?
Solution Overview Green Creek Eco Farm Ltd. upcycles organic waste into insect-based protein for animal feed and organic fertilizer using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming. How It Works: Organic Waste Collection: We source waste from farms, markets, and food processors, preventing landfill pollution. BSF Bioconversion: The waste is fed to Black Soldier Fly larvae, which rapidly grow while breaking down organic matter. Protein Meal Production: The larvae are harvested, dried, and processed into a high-protein (43%) animal feed alternative, replacing costly soybean and fish meal. Organic Fertilizer: The byproduct (frass) is a nutrient-rich soil amendment, enhancing soil health and reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers. Technology Used: Bioconversion Technology: A natural, efficient waste-to-protein process. Sustainable Processing: Low-energy drying and milling techniques. This solution lowers feed costs, improves soil fertility, reduces emissions, and promotes circular agriculture.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Green Creek Eco Farm Ltd. primarily serves smallholder farmers, animal feed processors, and agro-input retailers in Uganda. These groups often face challenges such as high costs of conventional fertilizers and animal feeds, limited access to quality agricultural inputs, and reliance on unsustainable practices that harm the environment. By providing affordable, organic fertilizers and insect-based protein feed sourced from organic waste, our solution directly addresses their needs for sustainable, cost-effective agricultural inputs. Smallholder farmers will benefit from enhanced crop yields and livestock productivity, leading to improved food security and income. Animal feed processors gain access to eco-friendly, high-protein alternatives that reduce dependence on traditional feeds, promoting sustainability in the industry. Agro-input retailers can offer innovative products that meet the growing demand for organic solutions.
