What specific problem are you solving?
At Angirus, we are tackling the dual environmental crisis-
1. Plastic pollution and construction waste. India alone generates over 9.3 Million tons of plastic waste from which 43% is single use and only 8% gets recycled. We also generate more than 200 million tonnes of construction and demolition (C&D) waste and yet have only 1% recycling capacity. This waste often ends up in landfills, rivers, or incinerators, worsening air quality and public health.
2. On the other hand, The traditional brick industry, which uses clay and water and coal to generate energy, is one of the top polluters—responsible for ~9% of India’s carbon emissions and 20% globally, as per UN.
Our solution, Wricks, transforms single-use plastic and C&D waste into high-performance, damp-proof bricks, reducing both landfill waste and carbon footprint. The problem we address affects millions of urban residents globally by contributing to unlivable air, water pollution, and climate change. Our intervention aims to build circular economies while reducing emissions in rapidly urbanizing regions like South Asia and beyond.
What is your solution?
Our solution, Wricks, is an eco-friendly brick made entirely from recycled plastic and construction waste. It replaces traditional clay bricks, which harm the environment, with a cleaner and more sustainable alternative. Wricks are damp-proof, 20% lighter, 40% stronger, and 60% better thermal insulation than regular bricks.
We use a proprietary, patented technology to mix low-value plastic waste (like single-use packaging) with inert construction waste (like broken concrete or marble slurry). This mixture is processed through a specially designed machine that binds and shapes the material into strong, durable bricks—without needing water or coal, and in just one day.
Unlike clay bricks, which release harmful emissions and use fertile soil, Wricks reduces carbon footprint and diverts waste from landfills. It's designed for rapid urban construction while supporting green building goals.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
We serve three key groups: waste workers, green builders and architects, and urban communities.
1. We directly engage with waste management organizations to source waste materials and train informal waste workers by integrating them into our manufacturing process and providing them with dignified jobs, stable income, and safe working conditions. This shifts them from unsafe, unregulated labor to formal employment in the circular economy.
2. We also support green builders and architects seeking sustainable materials for eco-certified construction. Wricks provides a high-performance, cost-effective alternative to traditional bricks, helping them reduce carbon emissions and meet green building standards.
3. Lastly, urban communities benefit from cleaner surroundings as we divert plastic and demolition waste from landfills and water bodies, improving public health and environmental quality.
