What specific problem are you solving?
In the U.S., a child’s zip code, network, and educational access determine their outcomes more than their talent or effort (Dr. Chetty). This structural inequality leaves millions of under-resourced youth locked out of economic opportunity, not because of a lack of potential, but because of a lack of access.
Marginalized students face systemic barriers to mobility: underfunded schools, limited access to mentors, and career guidance that doesn’t reflect the demands of today’s economy. With the rise of AI, these gaps are widening. McKinsey estimates that over 50% of gateway jobs will be disrupted by AI, disproportionately affecting low-income workers.
The economic toll is massive. A persistent education gap cost the U.S. $2.3 trillion in economic output in 2008 according to McKinsey. Students without degrees earn 75% less on average (Bureau of Labor Statistics) and 9 out of 10 first-generation low-income students don't graduate (First Generation Foundation).
REACH provides AI-personalized, gamified scaffolding across a 7-year high school-to-career journey—so under-resourced students don’t just catch up, they lead in the future of work.
What is your solution?
Chicago Scholars has supported 6,500+ first-generation students with outcomes 2–7x the national average—and 52% now out-earn their parents. McKinsey projects Scholars will earn $6.8 billion more than their peers over their lifetimes. We launched REACH Pathways™ to scale access to this proven model.
REACH is an award-winning, AI-powered career development platform that guides under-resourced youth from high school to career based on Chicago Scholars' proven curriculum. Designed by and for Gen Z and Gen Alpha learners, REACH uses gamified “quests” to teach the unwritten rules—how to network, secure internships, build career-ready skills, and access real-time scholarships and jobs. Each journey is personalized by AI and supported by a community of near-peer mentors and employer partners.
REACH was co-designed with youth and shaped by hundreds of interviews conducted during the NSF Vital Prize Discovery Round. Recognized by the Tools Competition, Catalyze Challenge, Fast Company, SXSW Pitch, and the Chicago Innovation Awards, REACH is preparing the next generation for a workforce transformed by AI and automation.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
REACH Pathways serves under-resourced students—primarily first-generation college students from low-income communities. Over 56% of users grew up low-income, 50%+ are first-gen, and 75% identify as people of color. These students are striving for success while navigating systemic barriers with limited access to guidance, networks, or financial support.
Every decision we make centers their voices. Through hundreds of interviews, we identified three core needs: Pathways, Belonging, and Finances. REACH meets those needs head-on.
To support pathways, students are guided step-by-step by AI-personalized quests that demystify the “unwritten rules” of college and career—everything from joining clubs to navigating internships or negotiating a salary. They’re asked, “What are you REACHing for?”—and REACH-E helps chart the path forward.
To foster belonging, REACH connects provides a Reddit-style social community with relatable near-peer video content from others who’ve faced similar challenges.
And to address financial barriers, REACH surfaces real-time scholarships, jobs, and financial literacy tools tailored to each student’s goals.
Delivered via web-app and mobile-first design, REACH empowers youth to take control of their futures—no matter their zip code.
We believe education is social justice, and REACH ensures students don’t just persist—they lead.
