What specific problem are you solving?
Nigeria, home to over 220 million people, faces a severe access-to-medicine crisis. More than 70% of healthcare costs come from out-of-pocket payments, and more than half of Africans lack regular access to essential medicines, leaving millions, especially in low-income, urban, and peri-urban areas, unable to afford life-saving treatment. At the same time, Nigeria’s pharmaceutical sector suffers from inefficiencies that lead to substantial waste: large quantities of medicines are discarded yearly, mainly due to short shelf lives, poor demand forecasting, and a lack of centralised redistribution systems. Despite this surplus, many patients go untreated or skip medication due to cost, worsening health outcomes and straining public health systems. Unused drugs that expire are often discarded improperly, creating environmental and safety hazards. This paradox of medicine scarcity amid surplus is a persistent, large-scale problem that contributes to Nigeria’s high rates of maternal mortality, infectious diseases, and unmanaged chronic illnesses. Addressing this crisis requires innovative, scalable systems that close the gap between excess supply and unmet demand.
What is your solution?
Bvida is a pharmaceutical sustainability platform that improves access to affordable medications while reducing drug wastage. We are starting as a web—and mobile-based marketplace that lists short-dated, still-effective medicines at discounted prices, connecting surplus inventories from pharmaceutical suppliers to individuals, pharmacies, and hospitals with urgent or near-term needs. Our platform features a user-friendly interface and will be integrated with an AI-powered recommendation system and prescription verification tools to optimise matching between demand and supply in the near future. These features will enhance transparency, safety, and speed in purchasing processes. Currently, we are onboarding licensed pharmaceutical companies and distributors via WhatsApp and Instagram while building customer awareness through campaigns and loyalty programmes. We’re forming strategic partnerships with stakeholders across the pharmaceutical value chain to ensure compliance, trust, and sustainable supply. Bvida also plans to introduce tech-based solutions for proper expired drug disposal, helping partners comply with regulatory guidelines. In simple terms, Bvida prevents safe medicines from going to waste, delivers them affordably to those in need, and empowers pharmacies with a smart, digital redistribution system—contributing to both access and environmental goals.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Bvida serves both low-to-middle-income individuals in Nigeria seeking affordable medications and small to medium-sized pharmacies burdened with unsold short-dated stock. Over 40% of Nigerians live below the poverty line, and even middle-income earners regularly face high out-of-pocket healthcare costs. These patients often skip prescriptions, delay treatments, or rely on substandard alternatives due to cost and access barriers. At the same time, local pharmacies and distributors lose millions of naira annually from expired or nearly expired stock, due to inefficient inventory turnover and poor forecasting. These losses lead to increased pricing, further limiting affordability downstream. Bvida directly addresses this two-sided inefficiency. For consumers, we improve access to safe, discounted medicines that meet immediate health needs. For suppliers, we offer a reliable channel to monetise short-dated stock before it becomes a loss, ensuring sustainable operations. We are also building a trusted ecosystem by partnering with licensed suppliers and integrating verification tools to ensure safety and compliance. Our future roadmap includes scaling into more Nigerian cities and expanding services, such as delivery, prescription verification, and telehealth—to deepen impact. Ultimately, Bvida helps underserved people access treatment affordably, while strengthening the pharmaceutical supply chain from waste to wellness.
