What specific problem are you solving?
The problem we're solving is that there are over 100k Farmer Cooperatives that source agri-commodities from 33m Smallholder Farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa; but they lack the tools to enable the transparency and traceability that will give them linkages to global markets and essential digital financial services such as insurance, loans and carbon credits in order to improve incomes for Smallholder Farmers.
What is your solution?
Terralima is building a digital commodity chain platform where we connect a trusted network of farmers in Africa to global markets, who in turn get access to high-quality, traceable agricultural commodities at a fair, transparent, and stable market price. Terralima also connects smallholder farmers to essential financial services such as insurance, loans and carbon finance. Our platform is different in that we have a very strong embedded finance model that ensures that smallholder farmers can get access to adequate and fairly priced capital as well as tailor-made insurance products.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution primarily serves 33 million smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. The platform aims to solve their market linkage problems and lack of access to financial services. By providing a digital commodity chain platform, Terralima helps farmers gain better access to global markets and receive fairer prices for their produce, addressing the issue where they currently earn only 10% of the market value. The solution also provides access to essential digital financial services like loans, insurance, and carbon credits, which can help them increase productivity and become more resilient to climate shocks. Furthermore, by improving logistics and market connections, Terralima aims to reduce the 40% post-harvest losses these farmers currently face, leading to increased income and improved livelihoods. The platform also serves farmer cooperatives, providing them with tools for aggregation, traceability, and access to global buyers. Ultimately, Terralima strives to positively impact Africa's food security and the economic well-being of these farmers.
