What specific problem are you solving?
Maternal mortality remains alarmingly high in low-resource regions, with over 295,000 women dying annually from preventable pregnancy-related causes, according to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2022). Sub-Saharan Africa in particular bears a significant burden, with a staggering 542 deaths per 100,000 live births, far exceeding the global averages.
This crisis is rooted in several factors, including limited access to skilled healthcare professionals, fragmented data systems, and inadequate infrastructure, especially in rural and underserved communities. Many expectant women also lack reliable prenatal and postnatal care, which contributes to late detection of high-risk conditions such as preeclampsia and postpartum hemorrhage. In addition, poor connectivity, underdeveloped healthcare systems, and financial constraints often hinder timely interventions.
To address these challenges, we offer a centralized digital healthcare platform that utilizes AI-powered risk detection, telemedicine, and offline capabilities. Our platform aims to increase access to healthcare, facilitate early diagnoses, and reduce delays in seeking and receiving care—factors shown in multiple studies to contribute to up to 67% of maternal deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. By targeting underserved populations, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, we strive to provide accessible, personalized, and high-quality care to the most vulnerable mothers, particularly those facing geographic, financial, and informational barriers.
What is your solution?
Maternanet is a comprehensive AI-powered maternal healthcare platform that integrates telemedicine, predictive analytics, and offline connectivity to provide timely, personalized care. Expectant mothers use a user-friendly mobile app to schedule virtual consultations, track vital signs, and receive automated reminders and alerts for potential risks such as preeclampsia or postpartum hemorrhage. Healthcare providers, on the other hand, access a web-based app that offers real-time data analytics, interoperable patient data exchange and management tools, and advanced forecasting capabilities to prioritize high-risk cases. In low-connectivity regions, we emphasize offline functionality and SMS-based alerts to ensure continuity of care.
By combining machine learning algorithms with telemedicine and offline features, Maternanet offers a comprehensive approach to maternal care, addressing critical gaps in maternal healthcare. This empowers both patients and providers to access timely care and make informed, data-driven decisions, ultimately reducing preventable complications and improving health outcomes.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Maternanet is purposefully designed to serve expectant mothers in underserved regions, particularly rural and low-income communities where maternal mortality rates are disproportionately high. Many women in these regions lack access to skilled care and are hindered by geographic isolation or limited infrastructure. As a result, they miss critical prenatal check-ups and delay in seeking help even during life-threatening complications.
By providing AI-powered maternal care, we proactively address these gaps through predictive risk alerts, telemedicine consultations, and offline features that operate even in areas with minimal connectivity. Our interventions ensure that women receive timely care, crucial health information, and a direct communication line to healthcare professionals without the need for long-distance travel or wait times often experienced through long queues in public facilities. In doing so, we not only aim to reduce preventable deaths but also empower these women with more autonomy over their care and that of their families.
Ultimately, we aim to prove a cost-effective and sustainable way of providing maternal care, breaking down the financial and logistical barriers, and transforming how maternal healthcare is delivered, thereby contributing to ensuring safer pregnancies and healthier outcomes for mothers and newborns.
