What specific problem are you solving?
Indigenous women entrepreneurs face significant challenges related to technology, including limited access, lack of digital literacy, and systemic barriers that hinder their ability to use technology as a tool for economic empowerment. These issues are exacerbated by cultural, linguistic, and geographic factors, creating a complex and multifaceted problem.
In Mexico, many Indigenous communities lack adequate infrastructure, such as internet access and reliable electricity. Only 45.6% of the Indigenous population has internet access, compared to 75.6% of the non-Indigenous population. By providing digital literacy training and marketing tools to entrepreneurs, market access for their products is expanded.
Empowering Indigenous women through technology and entrepreneurship not only addresses inequality but also contributes to sustainable development at the local and global levels. Particularly in regions like Oaxaca, where 65% of women live in working poverty and 81% work in the informal sector, limiting their access to fair incomes and development opportunities (INEGI, 2022). Furthermore, gender-based violence is a serious problem, with 67.1% of women reporting having experienced violence at some point in their lives. Addressing these inequalities significantly contributes to improving living conditions and reducing the social gaps faced by Indigenous women in Mexico and around the world.
What is your solution?
Our solution is a comprehensive digital literacy and entrepreneurship program aimed at indigenous women from the Sierra Mixe region in Oaxaca. We seek to support them through in-person financial education workshops that promote economic and social development, strategic use of digital technologies, and the promotion of their products on social media.
Through training adapted to their cultural and linguistic context, we provide tools for women to market their artisanal and agricultural products on social media and/or digital platforms.
This fosters women's economic independence, strengthens their cultural identity, and offers sustainable alternatives to the conditions of poverty and violence they face.
By providing access to digital and financial knowledge, we give them the necessary tools to improve their income and quality of life, promoting positive change for themselves and their communities
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
This project directly benefits 150 Mixe women aged 15 and older by providing training in entrepreneurship, financial education, and the use of technology. It impacts their lives by benefiting their families and communities, strengthening the local economy, and promoting sustainable business models.
