What specific problem are you solving?
We often overlook a fundamental truth: improving learning starts with improving teaching. The fact that four out of five ten-year-olds in Latin America and the Caribbean cannot read a simple text is not just an educational crisis—it is compelling evidence that teachers lack access to effective strategies. In the Global South, learning poverty is directly tied to a lack of pedagogical tools and support for educators.
This challenge becomes even more acute in rural and conflict-affected areas, where systemic barriers—limited connectivity, fragile infrastructure, low teacher mobility, and persistent violence—make it extremely difficult for educational solutions to reach those who need them most. Even when the need is clear, current efforts often struggle to scale or adapt to the realities on the ground.
If we are serious about closing learning gaps, we must begin by closing teaching gaps. And that requires more than good intentions—it demands innovative, scalable solutions designed with and for the most excluded communities. The challenge is not just to improve what is taught, but to ensure that effective teaching practices reach every corner, leaving no one behind.
What is your solution?
TeachCompanion is a comprehensive AI- and technology-driven strategy to enhance teacher quality in rural and hard-to-reach areas by supporting the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach. It integrates two key tools to provide both on-ground and ongoing support for teachers in challenging contexts.
1. An AI-powered virtual mentor that delivers personalized guidance for teachers using structured TaRL programs. It helps with lesson planning, clarifies learning activities, and gives feedback based on audio recordings of classroom sessions. By simulating in-person mentorship, it provides consistent, on-ground-like support without requiring physical presence.
2. A structured instant messaging system offering categorized, ongoing support. Teachers receive pedagogical tips, classroom management advice, motivational messages, and reminders. This system is adapted to rural teachers' behavior: even if they don’t respond immediately due to poor connectivity, they regularly read messages, ensuring vital information is delivered.
TeachCompanion is built on four key insights:
1. training alone is insufficient without sustained, contextualized support;
2. connectivity is limited, requiring lightweight, asynchronous tools;
3. teachers may not respond promptly but do engage passively; and
4. in-person follow-up is often unfeasible in remote or conflict-affected regions, demanding scalable, remote solutions.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our target population includes approximately 37,000 rural multigrade teachers in Colombia and the 3.6 million students who depend on them for foundational learning. These teachers work in small, often isolated schools that serve children across multiple grades with limited resources and no in-person support from government or private educational organizations. In Colombia, 67% of schools are rural—an essential solution to educational coverage in regions where 25% of children live in hard-to-reach areas. However, this model poses deep challenges for quality education.
Rural teachers are systematically underserved. They face geographic isolation, poor infrastructure, unreliable internet connectivity, and, in many cases, insecurity due to conflict. These conditions make it difficult and costly to deliver training, mentorship, and evidence-based instructional support. As a result, rural teachers often lack the tools and guidance to help students acquire even basic literacy and numeracy skills, with approximately 80% of children in rural areas needing remediation instruction such as TaRL by the time they reach the third grade.
TeachCompanion directly addresses these gaps by offering continuous, personalized, and context-aware support. Designed for low-bandwidth environments and asynchronous use, TeachCompanion empowers rural teachers to improve instructional quality and student learning in the most underserved areas of Colombia.
