What specific problem are you solving?
In Colombia and many regions of the Global South, millions of young people face deep educational gaps that limit their development of key 21st-century skills. In Colombia’s Caribbean region, research indicates that upper secondary students show low levels of critical thinking, which hinders their ability to solve problems and make informed decisions (Montero Rivas, 2021). Globally, UNESCO estimates that over 1.3 billion school-aged children and adolescents lack internet access at home, restricting their exposure to digital tools and their technological literacy (UNICEF & ITU, 2020). This situation is even more severe in contexts with limited connectivity, scarce technological resources, and minimal pedagogical support, where educators lack contextualized methodologies and content to teach skills such as AI literacy, creativity, systems thinking, or collaborative work. Moreover, school curricula rarely incorporate tools that meaningfully and accessibly connect science, art, and technology for communities facing high educational inequality. This limits the social appropriation of knowledge and hinders the ability of children and youth to address challenges such as the climate crisis, automation, and digital misinformation. Our solution aims to close this gap by democratizing access to immersive STEAM-based educational experiences that empower both teachers and students to thrive in a complex world.
What is your solution?
Metamorflores Interactiva is a mobile educational experience that combines art, science, and technology. It integrates STEAM methodologies with augmented reality (AR) tools to foster essential 21st-century skills. Through an immersive exhibition and eco-educational sessions, it promotes critical thinking, digital literacy, creativity, and problem-solving in communities with limited access to educational technologies. The installation features interactive visual pieces that, through a mobile AR app, allow students and teachers to explore content related to climate change and socio-ecological systems. In addition, workshops and collaborative activities are held to strengthen skills such as research, scientific communication, and teamwork. The initiative is designed to be scalable, replicable, and adaptable to various contexts, supporting the social appropriation of knowledge and the strengthening of local educational capacities. Teachers receive training to integrate these tools into their pedagogical practices, encouraging meaningful learning environments that connect school curricula with global challenges. Metamorflores Interactiva is low-cost, requires no complex infrastructure, and can be implemented in rural or urban areas with limited connectivity—ensuring inclusion and equity in access to transformative learning.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Metamorflores Interactiva supports educational communities in marginalized rural and urban areas of Colombia’s Caribbean region, especially where access to educational technologies is limited. The target audience includes students aged 10 to 18, primary and secondary school teachers, and school and community leaders, many from vulnerable sectors facing significant barriers to educational innovation. These communities struggle with challenges such as limited teacher training in active methodologies, scarce educational resources, and a curriculum disconnected from today’s environmental and social issues. Our solution responds with an immersive experience that blends art, science, and technology to promote meaningful learning and develop 21st-century skills like critical thinking, digital literacy, creativity, and problem-solving. The project benefits students and equips teachers with practical, adaptable tools, encouraging the social appropriation of knowledge. By linking school learning to global issues like climate change, the initiative fosters a more inclusive, relevant, and innovative education—helping close the gap in access to transformative learning opportunities.
